It's Labor Day Weekend, and again hundreds of alcoholics and their families converge on Beaver for the Great Outdoor Beaver Meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is the 21st year of the "Campvention", and the theme for this year is "Celebrate the Gift." To those who have never experienced the debilitating effects of alcoholism, either directly or indirectly, this theme may sound like a. strange one. Monitor Photo/DeAnne Harris To those who continue to struggle with problems with alcohol, it may sound even more absurd ... Why would anyone want to celebrate being an alcoholic. The Gift they celebrate is sobriety. Although their stories differ, they have some basic things in common. All were being destroyed by their drinking, their lives in various stages of disaster. Then, something happened. Psychologists might call it a moment of clarity. AA calls it a spiritual awakening. Whatever. the label, alcoholics who were consumed with denial and unable tio see or take responsibility for the chaos surrounding them, become able to recognize the need for drastic changes in their lives. Unfortunately, most alcoholics are already doing the best they can with what they have. That is where AA comes in.
