Show Wiltors Monitor FEBRUARY 2, 1996 PAGE 2 Tiger Sports Thoughts From Your Public Health Nurse It has been my pleasure to serve Beaver County for 3 months now and I feel it is time to give the residents of this county a report card. [have spent quite a chunk of my time getting familiar with the program presently in place for Beaver Citizens. WIC is a program for Women Infants and Children to supplement imcome with nutritious foods and education to improve the health of our children under 5 years old. BYB is a conduit for pregnant women to. get mto their health professionals as soon as possible after they become pregnant. Early intervention . is a major factor in healthy pregnancy and healthy babies. We also supply immunizations - Our generation has never known how devastating serious illnesses can be to be reminded we should all visit the cemetery at Frisco sometime. We never want to see an outbreak of Polio or whooping cough or nay of the other preventable illnesses destroy our community when these illnesses are preventable at a very low cost. Family Planning is not to be confused with planned parenthood. We help women choose a safe method of birth control with their Dr, so they will be healthy and prepared when they choose to become pregnant. lam working closely with your schools to develop a sound practice for ~ health in our schools. This program will include physicals, education on wellness, By Steven Erickson Boys Basketball On Friday January 26, 1996 the Tigers traveled to Wayne County to play the Badgers. Milford got off to a slow start as they trailed 20-8 a the end of the first quarter. Wayne increased the lead in the second quarter as they led at halftime 41-27. Milford tried to come back in the second half, but Wayne was too tough and they went on to defeat Milford 81-43. : The Tigers were led in scoring by Craig Wiseman who had 12 points. Milford will now play three games at home, Feb. 2 vs. Bryce Valley and Feb. 10 vs. Valley. Feb. 15 we will play at Escalante. Come on out and " support your Tigers. Region Wrestling The Region Wrestling Tournament was held on Saturday January 27, 1996 at Enterprise High School, Milford placed Sth as a team and did very well individually as 8 out of 10 wrestlers qualified for State with the other two going as alternates. To qualify for State, you had to place in the top four in your weight class. Those wrestlers who qualified for the State Tournament are as follows with season records in parentheses: Brett Thomas (15-8) at 103 Ibs. who placed 4th. Steven Florence (26-5) at 112 Ibs. who placed 3rd. Ben James (12-7) at 130 Ibs. who placed 4th. Cody Wright (18-10) at 135 Ibs. who placed 4th. Blake Ashley (14-10) at 171 Ibs. who placed 3rd. Ryan White (18-9) at 189 Ibs. who placed 2nd..Teft Short (24-7) at 215 lbs. who placed 3rd. The two alternates are Duke Barnes (16-2) who placed 5th and Josh Long (1212) who placed 5th. Tiger Wrestling is coached by Cullen Carter. Congratulations to the entire team fora great showing at the Region and Good Luck at State. The State Wrestling Tournament will be held Friday February 2nd and Saturday February 3rd at On Wednesday January SUU. The schedule is as follows: Friday Round 1 at 10:30 a.m., Round 2 at 1:30 p.m., with Round 3 to 24, 1996 the girls played their follow Round 2. Saturday, Consolation Semi-finals at 10:30 a.m.. Seniors Chalys Lamb and Angel Howard were honored before the start of the game. Panguitch jumped ahead MICHAEL DUANE HANLEY early as they led 17-9 after one Ogden/Milford: . Included m our future plan for our county is cancer screening to be done two times a year in association with the mammography van. This screening will do pap smears and breast exams and provide vouchers for mammograms. We also expect to have periodic cholesterol screening and we would like the public to call and express their desires for other programs. We are working closely with the Dr's in the county to maintain the excellent level of care available to the citizens. We are looking forward to.a long association with our communities for good health. All our programs are prevention and education oriented. We do not take _ the place of the close relationship we should all maintain with the physician of our choice. Jack Hiil, SUU's Director of Continuing Education, and LeRoy Walter, SUU Spanish Professor, will be in Milford on Wednesday, February 7, 1996 to meet with everyone interested in taking Spanish. They will discuss the costs, college credit, and a suitable| time and location for the classes. They are: particularly interested in finding out what your needs are concerning Spanish. One of the go will be to start with a basic "survival" Spanish before Cet a Spanish 101 class. It is very important that to have a good turn out for this meeting to show our support. of SUU's endeavors to meet our needs. Mike — was a very generous and caring and soft hearted man who was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Karen of Ogden, son Michael John of Ogden, daughters, Jill and Dan . Collins of Lakeville, Minnesota, Beth & Charles Usery of Ferndale, Joseph (Joe) Hickman was Town Marshall of Milford Washington, and Dara & Richard Wallace of Aurora, Colorado. 9 Grandchildren. Mother Lou Jean | Hanley of Milford. Sisters, Carol & Doug Albrecht of Minersville, Kathleen & Richard Rose of Milford, and Brothers, Kevin & GRANDFATHER HICKMAN Debbie Hanley of Salt Lake City, and Brian & Sharolyn Hanley of Beaver. He was preceded in death by his daughter Margaret Jean Hanley. Funeral services were held Monday, January 29, 1996 in the — in 1903 and 1904 or for two years. He had a history of cleaning up Milford or runningthe hoodlums. and bad guys out of town. At one time he was taking a prisoner to Salt Lake City on the train, the prisoner grabbed the marshalls gun and shot his second finger on his left hand off at the knuckle. Evidently Marshall Hickman got his prisoner on to Salt Lake City. This is another little part of the early settling of Milford. Interment was in the Milford Cemetery under the direction of Olpin Mortuary. Elizabeth and Angela Myers Ms. Angela Myers on Dean's List Angela Myers, daughter of Blake and Diane Myers of Nehalem, Oregon, recently made the Dean's List at the University of Portland. Ms. Myers major is nursing and she will graduate in May. Angela's twin sister, Elizabeth, is an honor student at Portland State University.
