Bridge Mullin, hospital Although bells have been associated with Christianity since the Martin, medieval times, it wasn't until 1660 that the Wilshire Foundry cast the first tuned bronze handbells. In 1845 P. T. Barnum introduced handbells to the United States. Since that time they have steadily gained popularity. There are four companies in this country that make handbells. English Handbells are cast of bronze, approximately 80% copper and 20% tin. As metal is removed from the bells during polishing, the pitch is lowered. Once a pitch near the desired pitch is reached, each bell is given a jeweler's finish and polished to a precise pitch. Once tuned, a bell. can never be retuned. Sealants are never applied to the casting. Doing so would make care of the bells easier, but it would also change the pitch. _ Twenty-eight bells are needed to start a two octave choir. Bells ordered now would not be delivered for several months. Contributions are needed to bring this non-denominational cultural advancement to the community. Memorial or honorary donations will be recognized by either engraving the name in the handle of the bell, or by engraving the name on a Plaque to be kept with the bells. "Flowers for a deceased one last only a day or two, but the music from the bells continues to bring joy," Reverend Wagner said.
