Show The Herald JournalAfterhours Thursday October T 18 1984- -9 Booklore Club to honor charter member review is more than I can handle right By Elaine R Alder correspondent now" she adds “but I help in other the members of Logan’s Booklore Club gather for their 50th anniversary Oct 22 they will honor a charter member who has attended 1000 meetings with the group Karma Weston 91 is still active in Booklore and remembers well the day the club When was begun “Six women were downtown attending a church officers meeting one day in October ISM" she recalls “and as we finished one lady asked if we had seen ‘The Barretts of Wimpole Street’ which was playing at a theater nearby Since none of us had seen it we decided right then and there to get together to go to the theater" Karma recounts also how the women enjoyed the play so much that they further planned to get together to hear Thelma Frank review the book a few weeks later They each invited a friend to join them and the afternoon was so pleasant that they continued meeting every two weeks “It's just as simple as that" Karma says of the birth of Booklore Club “It was so stimulating to see how much we could learn from each other and how much there was out there to read It has continued to be very important in my life" she adds Besides Karma and Thelma the other four who met on that first day were Blanche Woodland Helen Hickman and Fern Wood all of whom are living elsewhere and Marjorie Blood deceased Thelma Frank 78 hopes to attend the reunion celebration coming from her home in Pocatello Karma Weston’s attendance at Booklore sets an impressive record She takes her turn hostessing at least once a year and has reviewed a book yearly until about three years ago when her eyesight started to dim “I still read but mostly large print books and headlines in newspapers" Karma explains “I have a large magnifying glass for reading also but to read a book in preparation for a ways because my membership in Booklore is so important to me" One of the other ways she serves is to prepare a personal history about each new member of the club to acquaint the group with each other state that memBooklore's 22 members and to limited is bership Karma has seen many come and go during the 50 years A statement from Horace Mann printed in the Booklore roster sums up Karma’s feelings about literature and the daily need to read: “Resolve to edge in a little reading every day if it is but a single sentence If you gain fifteen minutes a day it will make itself felt at the end of the year” by-la- twice-month- Karma’s formal education ended at age 17 when she had to leave the Fielding Academy and go back home to Bloomington Idaho to care fur four younger brothers and sisters when her mother was seriously OL “My father promised me that if I would leave school to help at home that year he would send me to the McCune School in Salt Lake City the following year" Karma remembers “I dropped out of the academy but was not able to return to school there or in Salt Lake because my mother did not regain her health It disappointed both my father and me but I had to spend the next three years helping at Karma Weston has set an example for her children and grandchildren who also find books interesting Betides her eight children and their spouses she has 79 114 greatggrandchildren randchildren and six “I hope they’ll all enjoy books and reading throughout their fives just as I have" Karma says Karma attributes her stamina and cheerful attitude about life to the feeling of worth she gains from her posterity and to the fact that she keeps busy aU the time Her home is filled with handmade items of every description “My hands really never stop going" Karma laughs “and I’d be in trouble if they did" Her spry wit and ready smile are enhanced by her sparkling blue eyes and crown of white hair as she shares her handicrafts They aren’t the usual handmade' home” While at the academy Karma met Herbert Weston who had come over from Laketown for missionary preparation lessons He went to England for 2tt years and they married when he returned She was then 20 Karma admits that perhaps it was her leaving school early that whetted her appetite to books and learning after her marriage “I didn't have time to read a lot during the years I was raising my eight children’’ she says “but by the time we went to see 'The Barretts of Wimpole Street my family was older and the excitement for books dawned on me again" With Karma’s large posterity she 3Saturday 12:30PM ffl -
