Show W L FAR la m a BPS the writer had the pleasure yesterday of riding through the farms located between badeen honeyville and this city and which are served by the hammond mona canal despite the lateness of planting and the peculiar conditions that have prevailed throughout the season it is questionable if ever the crops looked so promising as they do at this writing the tremendous acreage of beets indicates a wonderful harvest barvest fot for the beets are of splendid size and growing like weeds every day the great majority of beet fields show a close stand and the farmers have t on the tha job jab to keep the weeds down so that a beautiful picture is presented if the tall fall season does not come on too early there will undoubtedly be some surprises in tonnage when the harvest begins not kot to be outdone by the beets the alfalfa has been attending to business with the result that the third crop Is now a foot high or more mare which means that there will be time enough after harvesting the third third cutting for a fourth crop to at least make excellent pasture this condition is especially ally pleasing in view of the hay famine last winter and the late spring which set everything back but the alfalfa has more than caught up the lois time and the yield in each cutting has been phe nominal it ought to assure the hay supply for the corning coming winter so that we ve will escape a repetition of last winters experience another feature observed was that a number of farmers have given abia a big part or of their farm to potato culture and in not a single instance was any diseased patches noticed but the vines all look thrifty and in splendid growing condition in some instances a small acreage has alveen given ever to producing wheat and the shocks with the heads of the grain all but breaking under their load joad perhaps looks better than all the rest for when it comes right down to the very gist of the matter bread is the most essential part of our living and the worlds supply of wheat is so decimated that every kernel produced this year is like a diamond A wonderful country is that lying west and north of this city and the outstanding feature ot of it all is that had it not been for the canal that immense area would today be almost worthless water has redeemed it and made it possible for mall man to take from the soil its treasure which has materially added to th the e wealth of the county and is rapidly making many an industrious farmer independent |
