BYU coach La Veil Edwards hopes his Cougars can break their recent yo-y- trend o McMahon with 8358 career yards in total offense needs only 87 yards against the Rams to e break the major college record set by Purdue's Mark Herrmann in 1977-8- 0 Herrmann had 8444 yards in total offense during his four years with the Boilermakers The Cougars are at CSU Saturday In a Western Athletic Conference game while Utah heads tar New Mexico and another WAC contest Utah State is also on the road at Long Beach State in a Pacific Coast Athletic Association matchup At home this Saturday will be Weber State and Southern Utah State hosting Augustana against Western New Mexico BYU raced out to a 0 record this fall But then the Cougars went into their performances They were upset by Nevada-La- s Vegas but then handed pre v iously-u- n be a ten San Diego State its first loss of the season Then coming off the outstanding win at San all-tim- a 5-- up-do- Diego the Cougar went into the tank at Wyoming losing 27-- 7 However BYU came roaring back from the loss to the Cowboys to whip New Mexico 31-- 7 BYU is now 2 overall and 41 in defense of its WAC crown heading into Fort Collins Colo "Our backs are still against the wall in the WAC but we need to become more consistent if we're to have a chance in the conference race with three games to go" says Edwards "Despite Colorado State’s record this year they've gotten off to a good start in each game" Edwards said “So we’ve got to have a good effort early in the game to keep them from getting 7-- ahead" The BYU coach also said McMahon’s left knee “is getting better with each game" McMahon injured his knee in the fourth game of the season missing the next two contests But since his return he has passed for more than 280 yards in his last three starts — upping his season record to 2183 passing yards in just seven games 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions If Utah is to win at New Mexico this weekend and remain unbeaten in the WAC race Ute coach Wayne Howard says he’ll have to figure out a way to slow down the Lobo defense The Utes are 0 in the conference and 1 overall 4-- 7-- for their heading into Albuquerque NM regionally televised game Saturday “New Mexico may be only 36 but the way they play on defense it looks like they have 13 players coming at you" says Howard “Our offensive line will have to play better" The Utes unit Perko a senior defensive tackle has been the most USU defender by the media a fact he singled-ou- t accepts but is leery of "Without the other 10 guys I can’t do the things I do" he said You can't even write about Perko without writing about the other defensive members “It takes all 11 guys working together Defensive linemen get sacks because the secondary and linebackers are covering receivers Defensive backs get pass interceptions because the defensive line hurries the quarterback You have to work as one unit” In an otherwise unspectacular season the Aggie defense has stood out as actually the anchor of the team Perko was the one tabbed for honors in turn drawing most of the attention by opposing teams And true to Perko's word the opposition should have thought about the
