Show Weber St only Utah team staying home By United Press International Brigham Young quarterback Jim McMahon should become the NCAA career total offense leader this weekend at Colorado State but BYU coach La Veil Edwards hopes his Cougars can break their recent yo-y- trend o McMahon with 8358 career yards in total offense needs only 87 yards against the Rams to e break the major college record set by Purdue's Mark Herrmann in 1977-8- 0 Herrmann had 8444 yards in total offense during his four years with the Boilermakers The Cougars are at CSU Saturday In a Western Athletic Conference game while Utah heads tar New Mexico and another WAC contest Utah State is also on the road at Long Beach State in a Pacific Coast Athletic Association matchup At home this Saturday will be Weber State and Southern Utah State hosting Augustana against Western New Mexico BYU raced out to a 0 record this fall But then the Cougars went into their performances They were upset by Nevada-La- s Vegas but then handed pre v iously-u- n be a ten San Diego State its first loss of the season Then coming off the outstanding win at San all-tim- a 5-- up-do- Diego the Cougar went into the tank at Wyoming losing 27-- 7 However BYU came roaring back from the loss to the Cowboys to whip New Mexico 31-- 7 BYU is now 2 overall and 41 in defense of its WAC crown heading into Fort Collins Colo "Our backs are still against the wall in the WAC but we need to become more consistent if we're to have a chance in the conference race with three games to go" says Edwards "Despite Colorado State’s record this year they've gotten off to a good start in each game" Edwards said “So we’ve got to have a good effort early in the game to keep them from getting 7-- ahead" The BYU coach also said McMahon’s left knee “is getting better with each game" McMahon injured his knee in the fourth game of the season missing the next two contests But since his return he has passed for more than 280 yards in his last three starts — upping his season record to 2183 passing yards in just seven games 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions If Utah is to win at New Mexico this weekend and remain unbeaten in the WAC race Ute coach Wayne Howard says he’ll have to figure out a way to slow down the Lobo defense The Utes are 0 in the conference and 1 overall 4-- 7-- for their heading into Albuquerque NM regionally televised game Saturday “New Mexico may be only 36 but the way they play on defense it looks like they have 13 players coming at you" says Howard “Our offensive line will have to play better" The Utes will also have a problem on defense with middle linebacker Bill Gompf on the sidelines due to a dislocated shoulder Gompf s replacement will be freshman Mark Blosch who has now moved up from the No 4 man to the starting assignment this season But Utah’s strength this season has been its defense The Utes are the No 1 team in the WAC in total defense and rushing defense and are giving up just two touchdowns per game this fall while averaging 32 points per contest And the Utes have been difficult to stop offensively They have four solid running backs — in Del Rodgers Carl Monroe Robbie Richeson and Hilria Johnson — who have combined for 1849 yards rushing this fall and 17 touchdowns Utah State is packing its bags for its final PCAA game of the season at 5 Long Beach State The Aggies — 1 in conference play — have at least a e tie in the PCAA if they can chance for a defeat the 49ers this weekend 2-- 3-- 3-- 0 “But if we win this Saturday Long Beach can still help us out by beating San Jose State" Snyder said “Last year Long Beach started out 3 but then won its final seven games to take the PCAA 1-- crown" “We ran effectively in our last game and we’re becoming more physical" Snyder said “And Doug Samuels is really developing into a very very good and aggressive collegiate quarterback" Since Samuels replaced Chico Canales as USU’s No 1 quarterback earlier this season the sophomore has thrown for 861 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for a sixth score Weber State coach Mike Price says his Wildcats will face an unusual defense against Augustana The Vikings call it a “radar defense" but it just means their linemen don't go down in a three-poior fourpoint stance They stand up and attempt to dodge past the onrushing offensive linemen nt first-plac- SPORTS Then USU will have to wait on the outcome of San Jose State's final two league contests USU coach Bruce Snyder says his Aggies and Long Beach State “are still in the championship race If Long Beach wins all Stout sports editor Mike Perko takes pride in talking about himself But Mike Perko takes more pride in talking about the other 10 starters and countless reserves on Utah State University's defensive unit Perko a senior defensive tackle has been the most USU defender by the media a fact he singled-ou- t accepts but is leery of "Without the other 10 guys I can’t do the things I do" he said You can't even write about Perko without writing about the other defensive members “It takes all 11 guys working together Defensive linemen get sacks because the secondary and linebackers are covering receivers Defensive backs get pass interceptions because the defensive line hurries the quarterback You have to work as one unit” In an otherwise unspectacular season the Aggie defense has stood out as actually the anchor of the team Perko was the one tabbed for honors in turn drawing most of the attention by opposing teams And true to Perko's word the opposition should have thought about the there’s no getting round his physical abilities shaking their heads And now the ironic twist He almost gave up the sport right out of high school Association and gave him eligibility for the '81 season But there is one area of USU’s defense that stands out in Perko’s mind “The defensive backs are just playing exceptional” Perko said not in his usual guarded manner “They literally stuffed San Jose State’s passing game” The Aggies narrowly lost a 4 decision and a possible shot at the league title but did shut down a highly touted Spartan offense 27-2- Don’t go thinking that’s the only area responsible for the rejuvination of USU’s defensive success from the past few seasons There are other reasons “Maybe it’s pride" Perko said “and confidence in what each other is doing I’ve got confidence in every one doing his job on the field” They should have confidence in Perko too He rates his current season at a consistent 90 percent of playing to perfection “I think that’s why coach
