part of the return to participatory amusements and hobbies he said in an interview Piano playing has become a socializing influence with young adults he said “We’re even teaching in prisons” Pollei is an advisor to the National Plano Foundation He is also head of the piano department at Brigham Young University in Provo Utah evening musicales are regaining popularity he said They let amateur pianists “play for each other in a situation That’s the mood of adult lessons now” Pollei thinks the proliferation of FM stations has enhanced interest in piano playing nationally Piano sales now are No 1 among musical instruments he said "A neighbor called me the other day Their children are grown and her husband ed is a Utah state official He wants to learn to play the piano and she said she would go back and study with him She had studied piano as a child “That story is repeated over and over again” Pollei said people who had “even a small degree of proficiency as a youngster find it really returns fast” Those who have never played have a slower physical digital response he said but all adults learn music theory rapidly Piano lessons have moved far beyond the monotony of scales “Scales (now) are later lessons for kids who want to be professionals” Pollei said Group teaching for adults and portable keyboards with earplugs also help “It’s not like having a Steinway Grand” he said of the keyboards “You don’t have full control or tone or bigness of sound” but they’re a useful learning “If I were going to teach adults I’d find out what their interests are — church hymns show tunes classics" Pollei said Adults are less demanding of themselves than younger students says another teacher Rons Rothenberg who conducts classes for adults 55 and up at Greenfield (Mass) Community College Ms Rothenberg said her pupils’ general reaction was surprise — first at the chance to learn and second at their ability to play device ' ' ' Beating high pleating cost NEW YORK (UPI) — Pleating that aophisticated touch of tailoring that allows a sleekhipped skirt to flow blow and sway with a worn an’ a walk has been a frequent fashion highlight ever since the tennis dresses of the 1920s Pleats in skirts and dresses are softer than straight skirts yet they can be smooth at the hips unlike some full skirts that bloom out from the waist and over the stomach and hips They’re naturals for wearing with jackets But nothing can take the charm out of a ideated dress faster than a dry cleaner who At 10 or 15 tells you he charges cents a pleat imagine the cost of maintaining a dress with accordion pleats — no matter what size you wear!
