Show 18 — The Herald Journal It’s Logan Utah Sunday September 13 1981 a win!’ Ag§ top Cal§tate Fullerton (Continued from page 17) yards to paydirt hitting Erie McPherson for an important first down and the first USU completion of the game with 9:15 left in the first half Eight plays later Maurice Turner bulled over from the two and Dale Money’s conversion made it USU with 6:29 left in the half Cornerback Larry Hogue helped preserved USU's intermission lead by intercepting Caffrey at the Aggies' nine the second of two interceptions by Hogue Kevin Brady grabbed the other The Ags took immediate advantage of another CSF mistake when Dan Stewart blocked a Greg Steinke field goal attempt and linebacker Pat McKenna scooped it up at the USU 24 with 10:52 to go in the third period Canales was then sacked for a nine-yar- d loss but on the next play found freshman wide receiver Paul Jones at the CSF 40 cutting across the middle of the 7-- 0 field between two CSF defenders outsprinted the stragglers for a who then touchdown 76-ya- rd bomb “That pass play was an automatic called by Chico at the line of scrimmage" revealed Snyder “That was a beautiful pattern" With USU carrying the lead until 4:43 left in the game Fullerton came alive With Tom SL Jacques back at the helm (after starting and giving way to Caffrey after the second series of downs) CSF marched 49 yards the drive capped by a touchdown pass of 39 yards to Norman Brown Brown had juked Hogue to get into the clear With 3:18 left in the game Snyder elected to use the pass in favor of the running attack and Canales threw an interception into the hands of Doug Boswell who returned it 22 yards to theAg49 But Bates grabbed his second interception of the 14-- 0 time-consumi- I had it to do over again I wouldn’t have him throw across the middle" Concerning the safety Snyder said "We felt we I needed to run as much time off the clock as we could I and the pressure they had been giving Guy and the I time element all added up to giving up Just two points and getting the free kick to put them deep" Were it not for the turnover department a glance at the final statistics would convince a fan that Fullerton won The Titans outgained USU both on the ground (102-8and often put the Aggies and in the air in poor field position via punter Scott Vernoy’s booming leg Vernoy outdueled the Aggies’ McClure Pacific Coast Athletic Association (a three-tim- e punting champion) by hitting seven punts for a game in the end zone to set the stage for a frantic final 1:23 The Aggies stuck at their own 14 elected to have McClure run out some of the clock and take a safety giving the Ags a chance to free kick deep to Fullerton and move them farther out of scoring range than with a punt But CSF's Brian Allen returned it to the Ag 40 and the hosts were assessed an additional 15 yards for a personal foul penalty on the runback putting the ball at the USU 26 Caffrey followed with two incompletions and Bates preserved the win with his third interception “I asked myself if we did the right thing by throwing instead of running when the interception happened” said Snyder "But we had not established the run at that point and I felt we needed to get some first downs to help run out the clock It was supposed to be a ’safe’ pass across the middle If I non-attendi- ng 0) (216-14- 3) 50-ya- rd average McClure who had two punts partially blocked finished the afternoon with a 448 average Austin is champ Borg faces McEnroe (Continued from page 17) I think I tried too hard When you want something to happen so Borg one step away from the championship he now covets more than any other made few mistakes against Connors dropping Us service only once That came in the fourth game of the second set on a backhand crosscourt pass by Connors and the fourth seeded American then held his service to lead 41 But Borg giving up a lot of his usual topspin to hit flat shots broke back in the seventh and 11th games Borg then broke service in the ninth game of the final set and held service at 15 to wrap up the “I tried so hard bad” match As is often the case with the tempestuous McEnroe it took a loud shouting match with the umpire to get Um rolling He was guilty of 14 unforced errors in dropping the fourth set and he appeared shaky in the fifth as Gerulaitis had five break points on McEnroe’s first two service games In the fourth game McEnroe protested to umpire Leon Lipp of Dallas after a point was taken from Um because Gerulaitis pointed out a ball had been thrown out of the stands After receiving a time warning and breaking a string on his racket when he banged it on a boom mike hovering in front of his face McEnroe proceeded to make the decisive break and then held his service at love for a commanding 1 lead Gerulaitis did have four more break points in the seventh game— giving him a total of nine for the set— but McEnroe warded off all of them And consistent with the battling nature of both players— the thrilling 3 hour and 47 minute marathon ended on a disputed point with Gerulaitis claiming that McEnroe’s winning point was out Gerulaitis protested loudly to Lipp in the process treating a national television audience to an obscenity that couldn’t be beeped and earning himself a 8750 fine for verbal abuse of an official set in the 12th game after a McEnroe double fault at 15-3-0 But McEnroe gained his initial break of the match to open the second set and evened matters with another break in the ninth He seemed in command with two more breaks in the third set "I'd like to see CBS put a few mikes on the scrimmage line or on Reggie Jackson as he crashes into the wall” Gerulaitis said “This isn’t golf where you have time to collect yourself You’re out there running 200 miles an hour and you say things under your breath If you want to put it on national TV that’s fine with me” McEnroe typically on the defensive said of the call "It’s unfortunate to end a match like that People will blame me as if it’s my fault To my eyes the ball was good But my eyes are a little biased in that situation” Gerulaitis who lost the 1979 Open final to McEnroe and was seeded 15th this time after allowing his game to deteriorate made the only break of the first 4-- In the third game of the fourth set McEnroe foil over backwards and suffered a slight sprain of his ankle and two games later he double faulted on the final point to allow Gerulaitis to even the match at two sets “Maybe subconsciously it bothered me a little but after a couple of points it went away" McEnroe said of the injury In the final set McEnroe struggled saving one of the nine break points against him with a backhand let cord that Just dropped in “God was on my side" McEnroe said i The Big hoys’ fall prey to the upset Press International By United our coaching was poor" he said “It’s a miracle we It was bound to happen sooner or later but Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler certainly didn’t expect it to occur when his Wolverines were rated as the top team in the nation The University of Wisconsin which had not beaten Michigan since 1962 and had been outscored 176--0 in their last four meetings upset the Wolverines 4 Saturday before a Jubilant home crowd of 68733 at Camp Randall Stadium “I told the squad before the game that outside the guys right here in this room there probably isn’t anyone who believes or knows we can win this football game" said Wisconsin Coach Dave McClain "A lot of people didn’t give us much of a chance but we believe we can do it “It’s the greatest thing that ever happened to me” Schembechler found it easy to put the game in 21-1- perspective “Our offense wasn’t any good our defense wasn’t any good our kicking game wasn’t any good and ( only lost by seven points “It's as simple as this We’re not as good as everybody thought we were and they're a lot better than anyone thought they were” Jess Cole threw two touchdown passes — one a screen pass to John Williams — and Chucky Davis scored on a run to spark Wisconsin lead on quarterbck Steve Michigan had taken a Smith’s run with 9:17 left in the second period before Wisconsin roared back to take a 14--7 lead at 71-ya- rd 7-- 0 rd the half Cole hit Marvin Neal with a 3:47 left in the half and Davis’ TD pass with run with 2 seconds left before intermission gave the Badgers the momentum for the final 30 minutes However Michigan struck first in the third period on an TD run by Butch Woolfolk that tied the game 4 But with 5:13 left in the third quarter Cole hit Williams with the deciding TD Two plays before the score Michigan had Wisconsin in a second-and-2- 1 situation on the Wisconsin 19 but got 89-ya- 14-1- called for pass
