Show FOCUS - Li Logab Utah Tuesday May 5 1981 The Herald Journal Ijiv iCriHfeAl A High-ener- gy famine in 'tf ?kv £’’! wwyj' 3 s£s vi : irf food from UNICEF is helping to break the Uganda but there are still thousands of these CHILDREN of KARAMOJA Uganda — It’s a world far removed America where the biggest diet problem is obesity In the n Karamoja area of Uganda the people are famine-stricke- starving As many as 200000 persons are dependent on food assistance in the area and to meet the need the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is expanding its emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts UNICEF has set up centers where severely malnourished children and mothers are given food generally consisting of maize porridge or high-ener- gy biscuits and milk depending on availability Before a child is admitted to a center he is carefully weighed to determine the severity of malnutrition The weight of the children on the average is 75 percent of normal UNICEF reports but some are even down to 60 percent And some obviously malnourished children must be turned away in favor of those in even worse shape UNICEF operates nearly a dozen centers which accomodate from 500 to 2500 children apiece The children are so hungry that they scrape the maize porridge bowls for even the tiniest leftover scraps After new supplies arrive at each center it is not uncommon to see people fighting over them And long after the relief trucks have left people can be seen picking up every single grain of maize that may have spilled to the ground Mf If f't '' t' isj-- yj'z JHtj - ‘f 'V r'tsi ' TANZANIA i 'V - j- - '- : - ij u |
