The Herald Journal have a carrier and Mrs Hancey got the job for her son This was in 1929 and he continued to carry the paper until 1936 assisted by his dog Jack who would pull the papers on a sled in the winter Gunnar Rasmusson was publisher of the Cache Valley Herald In July of 1931 that paper and the Logan Journal were combined to form The Herald Journal The first issue of this new paper came off the press on Aug 1 1931 In those days the newspaper was produced in what is called a “hot metal shop" The type was set in hot metal and the pages made up with galleys of metal type Maurice was hired to work in the stereotype room in 1934 making castings for the paper During this time he taught himself to operate a Linotype By Edith Morgan people editor as there has been a Herald Journal Maurice Hancey has been associated with it For seven years he carried papers and for 44 years he has e been a employee He retired Jan 1 but will continue to work part-tim- e As long full-tim- He was born in Hyde Park to Lee and Florence Reeder Hancey He graduated from North Cache High School and attended Utah State University While he was still in high school a man selling subscriptions for the Cache Valley Herald knocked at the Hancey door Maurice's mother said she would take the paper but wondered who would deliver it The man said they did not ‘ machine working during his noon hours and for an hour after the regular workers had left He became an operator in 1936 “He was an excellent operator" Kenneth Braegger production manager at The Herald Journal recalls often setting galleys He learned to fix his own machine and keep it operating and set both editorial copy and copy-perfe- ct ads In 1968 The Herald Journal changed to an offset production and moved to its present location Maurice retrained himself to run a ihore sophisticated typesetting machine a Photon 200-and became a proficient operator Five years later the company purchased a compugraphic ACM 9000 and again he adapted and learned to operate this B honor Weltis By USU Information Services The Utah State University Alumni Association will present its Merit Citation Award to Mr and Mrs Walter Welti Feb 6 They will be honored at and program that evening at 7 pm in the Hotel Utah Empire Room Salt Lake City a reception Welti is professor emeritus of music at USU He relates that after he had completed a music degree at Cornell University and two years of law school there “a happy little weatherman came to make his permanent home with us so we accepted an offer to teach at Utah State Agricultural College" That was in 1925 From then until 1962 when he retured from Utah State Welti taught voice directed choruses and became widely known for the oratorios and operas he presented at USU He was prominent in state and national music organizations and in 1952 received an honorary doctorate of music degree from Ithaca College along with famed singers Jan Peerce and Jeanette McDonald Jeanne Tovey Welti attended Utah State and later was on the piano teaching staff at the school She studied with Tabernacle organist John J McClelland and was concert pianist Andrew Haig in New York Weltis now live in Salt Lake City Their children are Robert D Welti of Salt Lake City June Marie Jacobson La Jolla Calif Walter D Welti and Alice Elaine Orinda Calif Beuhner Charleston Utah Following the reception there jeep riding and hiking in the summer He also rides a motorcycle and when he was younger rode horses He likes to do carpentry and last winter took a class in woodworking at " working He married Daphna Duce and they are the parents of six boys and one girl The oldest Eugene died three years ago The and every summer Maurice grows a big garden He is an LDS High Priest group leader and has been in the
