- WASHINGTON For 18 months we have been urging the development of alcohol fuels to reduce this country's dependence on imported oil Alcohol distilled from timber wastes agricultural surpluses and even municipal garbage can be used as an additive to gasoline to produce “gasohol" Or with only minor adjustments to automobile engines it can be used as a dean-burnin- g substitute for gasoline The abundant supply of raw material for alcohol fuel would virtually let us thumb our nose at the Arab oil sheiks who now hare us literally over the barrel But partially because of pressure from the big oil companies which fear the 'competition of alcohol fuels the political and bureaucratic ostriches in Washington have been reluctant to encourage the production of gasohol President Carter ignored the demonstrated e potential of alcohol fuel in his original a for to single energy message Congress except sentence added at the last minute And incredibly the Department of Energy didn't even list alcohol among eight energy technologies recently targeted for commercial development The need for an alternate supply of automotive fuel is beyond question What the public doesn't realize though is that the potential of alcohol fuel has already been demonstrated beyond question Alcohol blends are being sold at more than 130 gas stations in the United States today competing with premium 103-pag- Washington d gasoline at slightly over 70 cents a gallon Consumer acceptance has been phenomenal Iowa officials report that stations introducing gasohol blends "can expect increases in sales volume of up to 200 percent" The distributors' only problem is keeping up with the demand The main difficulties facing widespread use of alcohol fuels are the lack of distilleries and the cost of transporting the product to metropolitan markets The first problem could be relieved with a little incentive from Uncle Sam in the form of federal loan guarantees for distillation plant construction The second problem — transporting the fuel — could be avoided by building distilleries in metropolitan areas and using the plentiful raw material available to every city: garbage New York City for example now spends from S137S to S17 a ton to ship its garbage to landfills in the South This wasteful process could be stopped by the construction of alcohol fuel plants which would consume much of the city's daily load of garbage and at the same time would provide fuel for the Big Apple's thirsty gas pumps After years of there are now some no-lea- merry-go-roun- If so address it to Letters to the Editor PO proposals? In WASHINGTON There's no (NEA) better illustration of the hard times currently faced by the country's nuclear power industry than its 11th hour escape from the disgrace of not making a single domestic sale throughout 1978 On Dee 20 only 11 days before the end of the year the Commonwealth Edison Co of Chicago announced that it had agreed to purchase from the Westinghouse Electric Corp a pair of 1150 megawatt nuclear generating units Although nuclear power is not without notably long-termajor liabilities safety risks and numerous unresolved problems at the "back end” of the fuel it is far superior to other fuels in cycle one crucial aspect: Its strikingly low cost No two companies have more effectively -
