Show Herald Journal Logan Utah Thursday May 11 M-- Ths 1971 Movies in deniist9s waiting room IOWA CITY Iowa (UPI) — Between the antiseptic smell squirming children magazines and downright fear a visit to the dentist is a nerve-wrackiexperience for many people But researchers at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry think they have found a way to help ease those tensions — movies in the waiting room In a recent study researchers found new dental patients were less nervous after viewing video tapes while waiting for their appointments Although it's not like watching "Gone With the Wind” or “Star Wars” the Iowa researchers say viewing a pleasant experience beforehand can make facing the dentist and his shiny instruments a lot easier "We’re trying to relieve the anxiety people have due to the fear of the unknown” said Dr Henrietta Logan assistant professor in the College of Denout-of-da- te ng tistry “Dental treatment is a very anxious time for patients They don't know what’s going to happen to them There’s also a fear of pain The mouth is a very vulnerable area” The study focused on three groups of patients ranging in age from 16 to 73 Two groups saw films and the third was used as a control group for One group saw exempts of a travelogue about Iowa City and the other saw a film that featured a patient having a good experience during a routine visit to the dentist Ms Logan said the anxiety levels of all three groups were tested and the two that saw the films were less tense than the control group The study also found the film on the visit to the dentist was preferred because it was more highly recommended by the study group for other patients to view Ms Logan said the group that saw the travelogue may have been less anxious because it served as a diversion Researchers said the project was important because while numerous studies have been conducted on children during visits to the dentist little research has been done on anxiety in adults in a dental setting In addition Ms Logan said dentists who find ways to reduce anxiety in their patients may have fewer cancellations adding future research will focus on that area "There appears to be a relationship between high anxiety and cancellation of dental appointments" she said "Hopefully as patient anxiety is reduced cancellations will drop” the number of return-vis- it outcome of the study Ms Logan said the long-terin areas dental be waiting rooms viewing may perhaps equipped so patients could select their own tapes Possible subjects could include the education of dental students and interesting research projects in dentistry "I definitely think that it could be very useful to have patients view video tapes on their initial visits” she said m Lease of center requested -
