W AAGARD Something that arouses concern concern concern con con- cern and indignation in all of ofus ofus ofus us is the rash of ca campus riots that are destro destroying property and the educational process allover all allover allover over the nation This Legislature Legislature Legislature Legisla Legisla- ture has taken several steps to see that it doesn't happen on our own campuses During the week the House passed a bill bUl which would re require require require re- re quire in effect that any professor professor professor pro pro- fessor engaged in or encouraging ing such riots would be fired from his job I think that the most despicable thing about the disturbances such as the one oneat oneat oneat at San Francisco Is the fact that many of the faculty participate participate participate par par- in the uprisings and actively encourage them With considerable reluctance most of the House voted for the liquor control bills sent over overby overby overby by the Senate The Initial reaction reaction reaction tion of most Legislators when they first heard the bills bUls ex explained explained explained ex- ex by the Van Winkle committe committee committee com com- mitte was one of Who won on the referendum ballot last fall The thing that most people people people peo peo- object to in the bills bUls is the provision that state liquor outlets will be located within a limited number of restaurants restaurants restaurants rants where people or ordering food can also walk to the liquor booth and purchase mini bottles of liquor to consume with their meals The bills bUls are frankly compromise compromise compromise com com- promise which so of often often often of- of ten is the case with legislation It is not what was expected by the people who voted against the the liquor yet proponents of the lIquor drink did all they could to amend or kill kUl the bills The committee who worked so long and hard to prepare the bills bUls felt that they would ha have veto to make some concessions to the liquor liquor- the drink people in order to get the bills through and that it would be the only way to prevent a petition referendum from on the liquor-by-the-drink arising again each election The new laws will provide much tighter control and enforcement with respect to private locker clubs Another tongue-in-cheek tongue de decision decision decision de- de was on another bill the Senate sent to us providing forthe forthe for forthe the creation of a Governing Board of Higher Education This would put all the institutions of higher education including Snow College under the same board and would eliminate the various boards of regents boards of trustees etc of each institution Hopefully this single board in directing the affairs of each school would eliminate the biennial battle between the different schools for funds It would eliminate the duplication of services at different schools and Is designed to give us better service from our higher education education education tion tax dollar Many of us had reservations about placing that much power in a single board but the present situation badly needs some Improvement and perhaps this will wUl provide it ft |
