G and Martha Gee Smith When his father became Presiding Patriarch this Is the only office In the Church that follows the patriarchal line ID from father to son the family moved to Salt Lake City where young Eldred was educated inthe inthe in inthe the public schools the old Lat Lat- ter-day ter Saints High School and the University of Utah His first call to church service service service ser ser- vice was as a missionary to the Swiss-German Swiss Mission 1926 Later church positions included a stake mission in Liberty Stake 32 1929 and a term as member of the Stake Board of the Mutual Improvement Improvement Improvement Improve Improve- ment in the Ensign Stake for a year and a hat halt from November 1936 From that position he was chosen to serve as second counselor counselor coun coun- in the bishopric of the Ward May 25 1938 On March 10 1940 the stake was divided and Elder Smith was wasa a member of the high council serving until Feb 16 1941 when he was sustained bishop of the newly created North Ward In January 1944 he went to Oak Ridge Tenn as an engineer engineer engineer engi engi- neer for the Manhatten Atomic Energy Project and while there until 1946 he was president of the local branch of the Church Back in Salt Lake again he was sustained Patriarch to the Church on April 6 1947 and since that time he has traveled travel travel- ed extensively throughout the stakes and missions of the Church as one of the general authorities He married Jeanne Ness August 17 1932 in the Salt Lake Temple They have two sons and three daughters |
