Show L 3 Former Sanpete Residents To Judge Writing Contest R- R Three former Sanpete County County Coun- Coun F ty residents have agreed to tor r serve as judges for the Sanpete E Historical Writing Contest Two i educators one noted Utah writer m make ke up the roster of oft t Judges i t The trio includes Mrs Christie Chrls- Chrls tie Jie Jle Lund Coles Dr Bryant f Jacobs and Leland Anderson r r Contest officials report that i t entries were received from all allF F parts of the county from Fairview Fair Fair- f view to Centerfield and that 1 I i the ages of the authors ranged t from around 18 to 80 years of r age l Mrs Christie Lund Coles was born in Salina and later moved to Mt Pleasant where she lived until poor health made it necessary for her family to take her to a lower altitude She attended high school in Mt Pleasant and completed her schooling In Utah County She married E. E Elroy Coles and they have one daughter and three grandchildren Mrs Coles has been in poor health much of her life and feels that her writing has been her way of making a contribution She has published two books more than 1000 poems many stories plays and articles in church magazines as well as In national magazines One of her plays The Red Plush Parlor recently produced by Brigham Young University is currently in rehearsal by her stake and will be presented in the Provo Tabernacle on August and Another successful play The Brothers deals with Jo Joseph Joseph Joseph Jo- Jo seph and Hyrum Smith at the time of their martyrdom In 1844 Dr Bryant Jacobs author traveler lecturer native of Mt Pleasant graduate of Snow College received his B B. B A A. A De Degree Degree Degree De- De gree from BYU in 1939 and completed his University of Iowa in 1944 He has been teaching in the English and literature area at Brigham You Young n g University since 1946 He Is married to the former Barbara TIet Jen of Mon Mon- roe He taught for a time at the Richfield High School and served during World War II as an ensign in the U. U S S. S Navy He received military training at Tucson Arizona and Harvard Harvard Harvard Har Har- vard University and was as assigned assigned assigned as- as signed to communications duty aboard the SS Guam in the Pacific He was author of the literature literature literature liter liter- course for the Relief Societies In the Church from 1949 until 1964 He has traveled traveled traveled trav trav- extensively in Europe and has taught in Europe Leland E E. E Anderson born In Ephraim of pioneer ancestry Is conversant with the history and heritage of Sanpete County After serving a mission he married Blanche Hunsaker and entered the Seminary system of the Church teaching in the South Sanpete School District He la later later later la- la ter became superintendent of the district and was simultaneously simultaneously president of the South Sanpete Stake He left this area and moved his family to California California California Cali Cali- fornia while working In the doctoral program Mr Anderson presided over the Juab School District prior to fo returning to the Brigham Young University where he directs di directs dl- dl Seminary and Institute programs He now serves as patriarch of his stake A dynamic speaker he is in demand and his warm singular singular singular lar personality has brought him hima a host of friends and admirers |
