Show Report From Washington BY LAURENCE J. J BURTON US U.S. House of Representatives Millions of students across the nation have started back to school and although times have changed and students have become be become become be- be come a little more sophisticated sophisticated sophisticated the basic Rs R's are still pretty much standard works in elementary and secondary edu edu- cation And Am what about those students entering or ng with their college education Hopefully they will fulfill the promise they represent to us the hope and shape of the future The problems of America are challenging challenging challenging chal chal- to every student There Is one element which might disrupt the challenge It comes from what is called The New Left The new left Is more mare clearly seen as those students who refuse to live by the rules Here in the nations nation's capital they are easy to identify identity the hippies those who simply simply simply sim sim- ply dont don't care about the challenge challenge challenge chal chal- lenge set before them I admit we dont don't have the problems in Utah that face the major universities such as Berkeley Columbia Northwestern Northwestern North North- Northwestern western etc But we do have an element in every Utah college college col col- college col- col lege that is worth looking at Our Utah campuses have that fringe of long haired boys beards skirted micro-skirted girls or more commonly known as the Hippie Although the Hippie has only real really y made himself known tous tous to tous us in the last few years u thanks to our British friends who brought back the the fashion u there have always been nonconformists nonconformists nonconformists non non- conformists in our society Trouble is we always knew them as train-hopping train hobos The non-conformist non has de decided decided de- de decided that he must dissent The Therole Therole role he or she plays in college as a Hippie or non-conformist non gives just such an opportunity And perhaps its it's a good thing to have that opportunity After all as long as the student on our Utah campuses has that right to ask questions and getan get getan getan an answer from the administration administration administration adminis adminis- we wont won't have problems problems problems lems such as what occurred last year at Columbia The Hippie has brought problems lems to our campuses drugs Utah law enforcement officials have told me that there is not one campus unaffected Not one Utah campus lacks the problems of marijuana LSD or speed As a matter of fact its it's really a sad commentary on our ur times when Salt Lake Police Chief Dewey Fillis FUlis told me that even our Utah high schools have been the scene of drug traffic And then there are the After last months month's Chicago Chicago Chicago Chi Chi- Chi Chi- cago Democratic convention the have been termed a militant Hippie The Yip Yip- pies Youth International Party YIP didn't start out that way or at least their leaders tell tellus tellus tellus us so One of their founders Jerry Rubin a ring-leader ring of trouble at Chicago said the are only people who like fun Their proposed idea of fun was spelled out earlier this ye year r when they announced d their plans for the Chicago Conven Conven- tion They said they would hold holda old olda a swimming pa party ty with bathing bathing bathing bath bath- ing suit optional They said they would conduct a Miss MissY Y ippie contest They announced ed they would have a birth- birth pill control-pill hunt and believe it or not they said they would nominate Pig as a Presidential candidate Pig of course being a year one-year-old four-footed four va va- va But the the loving fun-loving showed their true colors when earlier this year they held a Yip-in Yip at Grand Central Station Station Sta Sta- Station Sta- Sta tion and it took policemen to stop the from turning the place into utter chaos In Chicago the tried to help put into effect a piece of legislation I introduced in Congress What I mean is that the tried to tear down Old Glory to hoist the Viet VietCong VietCong VietCong Cong flag nag They didn't succeed succeed suc suc- succeed or they would have found that under my bill desecration of the flag would mean they would have received a year in jail a fine or both And Am what's worse the leaders have said You aint seen yet They project a score of scenes similar to the ones which occurred at Columbia Berkeley and am North North- western Riot In our colleges colleges' Is what they're saying and they intend the to do the leading But I think the real problem for our colleges comes under the heading of 01 SAS Students for a Democratic Society FBI Director J Edgar Hoover reported this week that the C New Left on our campuses will be led by the a group which is infiltrated by supported supported sup sup- supported ported by and Inspired by the Communist Party Chicago's reporters talked about the WEB DuBois Clubs and the Student Mobilization Committee to End Em the War in Vietnam as trouble-makers trouble forthe for forthe forthe the Democrats Democrat but Hoover believes be believes believes be- be that is is now the leader of 01 all these groups and has a strong hold on at least 25 name big-name universities universities' and will infiltrate others The topic pushed by the new left will be the draft The Com Com- Party publishes hes a di directive directive directive di- di to its membership membership recently re recently recently re- re in in which it specifically pointed out that a continuation of the struggle to end the draft would be a great contribution toward the struggle to end the war In Vietnam We in Utah ought to feel lucky we dont don't have the problems facIng facing facing fac fac- fac- fac ing other universities this year rear but we must be prepared for what does lie ahead in our states state's institutions of higher learning It would be foolish for us to Ignore or dismiss the new left invading our own campuses We must protect the rights of individuals to practice the freedoms of speech assembly and of course the right te to todis- todis dis dis- sent But we must be aware of the problems which might result from dissent protest and demonstrations We as cit citizens citizens citizens cit cit- and parents must make sure that while we protect those freedoms for the dissenter we must also protect the many who are accepting the challenge which Is directed to every stu stu- dent |
