prospered as it never had before It was college football’s centennial year and people across the nation celebrated by turning out in record numbers Some student militancy did carry over to the football field Black athletes at some of the major universities like Indiana Wyoming and Oregon State protested against unfair treat ment and quit their teama but on the whole college football enjoyed its most eidting season in some time The desire to be the best gained in importance in 1969 and the familiar slogan “We’re No 1” became a battle cry by die end of the season The University of under the leadership of Darrell Royal emerged as the nation’s No 1 team in the United Press International Board of Coaches ratings but the honor was not easily achieved The Longhorns did not gain the No 1 rating until the near end of the season when mighty Ohio State which had held the No 1 position from the very beguiling of the campaign was upset by Michigan in its last' giune Even that didn’t clinch the No 1 spot for the Longhorns however R took a thrilling 4 victory Conference over Southwest rival Arkansas in the final game of the regular season to aew up the top spot for them Although Texas was declared No 1 in the ratings and was awarded the MacArthur Bowl by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as the best team in the nation there were still many who thought Penn State deserved both honors In fact the ''ui come-from-behi- 15-1- shunning of Penn State touched off a controversy that stretched all the way to the White House TCzas and Penn State which finished second in the ratings were the only two major college teams to go through all 10 of their games unbeaten and untied The Nittany Lions in fact completed their second consecutive season and stretched their unbeaten string through 29 games When President Nixon decided to present a plaque at the end of the season to the winner of the TexasArkansas game as the nation’s No l team he wu besieged fay phone calls and telegrams from outraged Penn State students and alumni The whole tiring became very trying and Nixon was forced to admit he wu sorry he ever got involved in the whole affair As it turned out Penn State would not get a chance to prove itself better than Texas The Nittany lions thinking that Ohio State would finish No 1 accepted a bid to day Missouri (9-1- ) in the (fcange Bowl instud of taking a bid to the Cotton Bowl where they would have met the Longhorns The reason: The Penn State players thougit they would have more fun in Miami than in Dallas Texas’ opponent in the Gotten Bowl surprisingly turned out to be Notre Dame The Irish who wanted money to increase their scholarship program for minority groups accepted a bowl bid for the first time since 1925 The Irish were on the season and were ranked ninth in the final ratings Michigan whose upset of Ohio'State shocked practically everyone tied the Buckeyes for tiie Big Ten Conference title and earned a berth in the Rose
