throughout the county in 1967 making Sanpete Sanpete Sanpete San San- pete a cleaner and more desire desirable desir- desir e i able place in which to live The beautification projects in Sanpete County during the year 1967 with every community participating participating participating par par- were as follows STERLING Two STERLING Two homes were remodeled and two painted Four old buildings were removed Streets and sidewalks were kept clean EPHRAIM Streets EPHRAIM-Streets Streets were kept clean and mowed Twenty-one Twenty building permits were issued for remodeling old homes and the construction of new ones They installed new pipe lines and extended extended extended ex ex- tended their water distribution improved their power sion Renovated and painted the interior of their indoor swimming pool Improved fourteen blocks of street in preparation for black topping MANTI Streets were kept free of litter and mowed period period- Five homes were remodeled remodel remodel- ed Post Office The bit spring east of town was cleaned and a new port was dug for the flow of additional water There were two homes painted GUNNISON A new tennis court was built on their city park Eight in the county has been quite active during the year 1967 with a total of forty farms or ranches sold There are three development corporations that are in the planning or engineering engineer engineer- ing stage for the development of summer cottages and recreation recreation recreation tion areas with plans for swimming swimming swimming swim swim- ming pools golf courses tennis courts and other types of outdoor outdoor outdoor out out- door recreation MORONI Moroni is the headquarters for Moroni Feed Company an integrated turkey growing cooperative in Sanpete County which last year processed processed processed pro pro- about turkeys The new water system being in installed installed installed in- in stalled this spring by Moroni City will help substantially in furnishing a satisfactory ry water supply to run the turkey processing processing processing sing division of Moroni Feed Co In 1967 Moroni Feed Company expanded its facilities at the turkey turkey turkey tur tur- tur- tur key processing plant location and feed mill at an an expenditure of approximately The development of a satisfactory satisfactory satisfactory tory water supply by Moroni City was important in making the decision decision decision de de- de- de to expand the facilities The turkey hatchery facilities were expanded in 1967 by approximately approximately ap ap- approximately ap- ap proximately 10 and the number number number num num- ber of turkeys hatched at this location was increased during 1967 by about 15 Within the next few years it is expected that another division of the turkey processing plant willbe will willbe willbe be built to further process tur tur- keys This addition will require when completed approximately 50 to 75 more people for at least six months per year A start on this new program may begin in 1968 CHANGES IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT UNEMPLOYMENT UNEMPLOYMENT MENT AND UNDEREMPLOYMENT UNDER EMPLOY MENT SITUATION A survey of the economics of the State of Utah by the Economics Economics Economics Econ Econ- Dept of the Utah State University showed that of the population of Sanpete County County County Coun Coun- ty has an income of less than Average unemployment rates in Sanpete County for the year 1967 were 90 compared to the national average of 38 Sanpete County is experiencing experienc experienc- ing severe under employment and un-employment un for the male workers Each of the high schools in Sanpete County conducts shop training including welding mechanics mechanics mechanics me me- and woodwork during the year Snow College has provided provided provided pro pro- vided a number of courses in business and vocation At the present time the Small Busness Business Business Busi Bus ness Administration is conducting conducting conducting conduct conduct- ing a course at Snow College for fora a period of ten weeks on business business business busi busi- ness administration The University of Utah Utah State University Snow College and North and South Sanpete School Districts cooperate in every way to provide assistance and training for people working in industry people in agriculture and for Family Management throughout the area A force of nine full and part- part time men spent an excess of 2600 hours on range long-range conservation conservation conservation conser conser- planning in Sanpete Coun Coun- ty Assistance to the farmers consists of projects such as cementing cementing cementing ce ce- ce- ce ditches for individual farmers and irrigation companies compan compan- ies and in non-farm non conservation work Assistance in conservation work consisted of approximately hours for 1966 This included in included included in- in surveying planning and supervising conservation work Approximately hours were spent in wide to the employable male of Sanpete County We have some time part-time employment but this needs to be broadened outto out outto outto to give annual employment for a larger base especially the men workers in the area The shortage shortage shortage short short- age of local funds needed to create create create cre cre- cre- cre ate and improve many of our businesses find funds have helped considerably to overcome this The incorporation of local improvement associations has made funds available that would not have otherwise been available available available avail avail- able for economic development in Sanpete County RECREATION Palisade State Park had new chemically treated rest rooms installed last year making the area more acceptable to the pub pub- lic Plans for this year are additional ad ad- additional additional campsites and a survey for a well to provide water for forthe forthe forthe the area The Manti ManU National Forest Improvements Improvements improvements im Im- Im- Im of camping areas is enclosed in this report Two new youth centers are opening up and will be of great help to our youth for good clean wholesome recreation Cow Palace Palace Palace Pal Pal- ace Lanes has made life more pleasurable for the county resi resl- dents Fishing and hunting plays an important role both economically economically economically econ econ- and for the welfare of the population The Ski Area at Fairview has had its opening year and is planning future de de- Plans for this coming year include the building of a aSki aSki aSki Ski Shelter Lodge with snack snack- bar and warming facilities ski- ski sport shop and sanitary ties They are also contemplating ing the possibility of snowmobile rentals and dealership and expanding expanding expanding ex ex- of ski trails by tree clearing and grooming t the h e slopes The national shrine to Love and Devotion at Fairview was in operation through the year 1967 with many visitors There are many more items of
