Show EPHRAIM PAIR MAKE TOUR OF NORTHWEST Mr and Mrs Ivan Benson returned returned returned re re- re- re turned last week from a vacation vacation vacation vaca vaca- tion with their son and daugh daugh- ter law Sheryl and Holly Benson Benson Benson Ben Ben- son of Salt Lake Their route took them through Canadas Canada's spectacular Ice-Field Ice Highway along the glacier and perpetually snow-capped snow Canadian The Bensons give this account of their travels Traveling north through Utah into Idaho along the Salmon River country on into Montana and north into Canada the ever- ever changing scenery was a panorama panorama panorama panor panor- ama of lush green field golden wheat fields well for farmsteads farmsteads farmsteads farm farm- miles and miles of dense timberlands and forests lumber mills and huge yards of newly- newly planed lumber not to mention the numerous lakes rivers and creeks with the present ever-present mountains along the sides distant distant distant dis dis- dis- dis tant or near or rising abruptly in steep clipps against the high high- way Our first night was spent in Missoula Mont Point of interest here was was' the University of Montana Montana Montana Mon Mon- tana campus The following day the route took us along blue azure-blue Flathead Flathead Flathead Flat- Flat head Lake The spectacular Columbia Columbia Columbia Co Co- Co- Co lumbia Falls had to be enjoyed and then followed Glacier National National National Na Na- Park and the breathtaking ing winding road carved on the mountainside with snow-capped snow mountaintops all around Across the canyon to the snow fields time was taken at the visitors' visitors point to tramp over the fields and to enjoy the many wild wildflowers wildflowers wildflowers flowers over the fields and actually under the melting snow From St. St Mary we drove north into Canada to Cardston Alberta to visit the Temple there Waterton Lakes Glacier Park the Canadian side of National Glacier or International Peace Park was one of the most delightful delightful delightful de de- de- de resorts visited The next day found us in Cal Cal- gary A tour of Hudsons Hudson's Bay Department Store was a must Banff National Park resort was the next stop Banff take visitors from the foot of mile-high mile Mt Lodge along the long foot-long cable car lift through a vertical distance distance distance dis dis- dis- dis tance of more than 1300 feet to the Cliff House on the summit summit summit sum sum- mit and a taking breath view Traveling along the Canadian Ice Field Highway the famous Columbia Ice Field comes into view The Dome Glacier is easily easily easily ily accessible by road At the top of the road some 20 to 25 snowmobile buses leave every few minutes loaded with pas pas- They rumble out over the old age-old ice fields Some visitors visitors visitors tors prefer to walk up the walkway walkway walkway walk walk- way to the observation platform to view the panorama At Jasper National Park on beautiful Athabasca River the popular attraction is the Sky Tram ride It soars safely and smoothly from the lower terminal al of feet to the summit of Whistlers Mountain feet above sea level to the Sky Dock visitors center There is clearly visible an area of several hundred hundred hundred hun hun- dred square miles On the return journey from Banff we went through Kootenai Kooten- Kooten ai National Park to Radium Hot Springs Here the four of us enjoyed enjoyed en en- joyed a leisurely luncheon overlooking overlooking overlooking over over- looking the canyon swimming pools etc from the glass enclosed enclosed enclosed en en- closed balcony It was a beautiful drive south into Kimberly home of the Sullivan Sullivan Sullivan Sul Sul- Sul- Sul livan zinc lead mines the worlds world's largest and the famous North Star Ski Hill Then into Montana along the west coast of Flathead Flathead Flathead Flat- Flat head Lake Midway between Butte and Bozeman are the Lewis and Clarke Caverns After a train ride up the steep mountainside passengers dismount and enter an open car much like those on ona ona ona a roller coaster They are pulled by cable up the remaining steep mountain to the mouth of the caverns The stalagmite and stalactite stalactite stalactite sta sta- sta- sta formations seen throughout through through- out are so fantastic as to defy description At Yellowstone Park we entered entered entered enter enter- ed near Mammoth Hot Springs and visitor center Most thrilling thrilling thrilling thrill thrill- ing sight in the park is still the upper and the lower falls of the Yellowstone River We next drove into the majestic tic Teton area nestling Jackson and Jenny Lake At the buffalo ranch south of Afton Wyo buffalo steaks were enjoyed This very rewarding trip gave us a greater appreciation for the whole of the North American Continent and its people |
