school board regarding the immediate needs of the schools If all the citizens of Salt Lake could be made to understand so perfectly what these needs are and why they must be met l they would not object to a logical increase of could neither the insist board on further levy 'going the limit of an extortionate-ratbecause it may have power to do so as the law stands The plan approved at the Lafayette meeting concedes that the board should add 1 mills to the present levy of 3 y2 mills to meet the pressing needs of the schools and that the people should be given opportunity to decide by vote whether bonds shall be issued to provide funds for new buildings Without going into a discussion of conditions which relegate elasses at some ‘of the buildings rooms where they study by winter months one major fact as unanswerable as any of the foregoing is that the needs of a city increase with and in proportion to its growth The average rate of increase in the number of Saif Lake's school pupils has been about 1000 a year and last year was abont 1300 It is axiomatic also that as a city grows its increase enlarges although the ratio may not change Financial facts are concrete suffragists in recognition of the valuable work women are doing to make our war victorious hangs on the very slender thread that a delegation of women who have this cause dear at heart was received at the White House this week the first condescension of this kind in more than a year It must be admitted that not all of the emissaries who appealed to Mr Wilson on this subject comported themselves in accord with his idea of presidential dignity and political diplomacy But what’s past is prologue and since the President has hung up the “to let” ’sign on those quarters in his mind where he stored opinions that the suffrage issue should be settled by the states it is not unseemly for the suffragists to take a view of the premises and begin their fight anew firmly resolved to prevent their
