Show Pace TIIE WESTERN MINERAL SURVEY 4 Western Minerals Co. Highlights Sohio Shifts Test United FE, N.M. Western Minerals Company held a special meeting of its board of directors on Nov. 6, 1957, in New York. The meeting was attended by Patrick J. Hurley, Alva A. Simpson, Jr., Norman S. Dike, Jr., of Santa Fe, and John K. Schemmer of New York. Also present were Frank Kernan and H. T. White, Jr., representing White, Weld and Co. As a result of the meeting, it is understood that the company will continue the development of its holdings in Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico, South Central Colorado and the Gas Hills area of Wyoming, with the overall objective of adding to its uranium reserves in those areas. United will continue its successful program of farmouts in oil and gas properties, situated in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. The companys continued operations and activities in Perlite, Tungsten, Barite and other mineral deposits emphasize its planned policy of diversification. Drilling Data SANTA in Santa Fe, discounting both the now famous Jesse Johnson October policy speech in New York and the fusion over fission prognosis made by Peter Cockcroft, the British scientist, Alva A. Simpson, Jr., president of United Western Minerals Company, today, expressed confidence in the future growth in the uranium mining industry, just as oil followed coal as the great power producing fuel, Simpson said, it seems inevitable that nuclear power will in good time, become the principal source of power in our nations industries, just as it has already become the bulwark of our national defense. I look for the steady, healthy and economically important growth of the industry. With ever increasing ore reserves and a AEC 10-ye- ar integrated mining milling program, with a guaranteed govern-e n t contract and financial strength stemming from regular income flow, Simpson said, United Western, looks to the future with extreme confidence. -- m The Homestake - New Mexico the first mill to Partners mill be built in the Ambrosia Lake is expected to be in proarea duction by January, 1958. Part of a continuing Bureau series on mining and milling methods, practices and costs throughotu the United States, the report was prepared through the open-pi- t cooperation of the Hanna Coal and Ore Corp., of Cleveland, Ohio, owner of the property. Opened in 1844 as an underground mine from which the ore was sorted by hand, the mine became a combination open-pi- t and 1920. in underground operation Through the years it underwent a series of openings and closings and finally was acquired by a Hanna subsidiary in 1935. Open-pi- t mining resumed in 1944 and underground mining was reintroduced in 1951. In 1954, all open-pi- t work ceased in favor of un- derground development. The Bureau report describing present-daoperations at Iron Mountain is exceptionally comprehensive and is completely illustrated. All phases are covered: methods of prospecting and exploration; ore estimation and methods of sampling; development mining; basic plan of mining; drilling; blasting; trimming; loading and transportation; hoisting; and milling. A discussion of y associated problems of mine ventilation, safety, drainage, power supply, and maintenance of equipment is included along with a presentation of cost factors for virtually every operation. Authors of the report are Robert F. Pettit, Jr., and Burton M. Reynolds, mining engineers, and Willis A. Calhoun, metallurgist, all stationed with the Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.
