All this indicated the practicability of the project and a test progrtm was instituted to determine the engineering data required for such a pipeline. A great deal of research went into the- design of the pipeline. A pilot model was built at Golden, Colorado, at the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. Here, a radioactive section of the pipe was included in the test line. By measuring the radioactivity of the slurry in the effluent, it was possible to determine, with the highest accuracy, the corrosion and wear that was taking place within the test pipeline. By removing the free oxygen from the slurry with sodium already-prepaire- d - sulfite, corrosion was almost eliminated. , Pipeline tests were conducted at Golden in a closed loop of full sized pipe. Pumping tests were made by the Wilson-Snyd500-fo- ot er Manufacturing Company Pa. Here various pistons, valves, seats, etc., were tested with the Gilsonite slurry mixture of ore and water. This test program took six months and confirmed preliminary evaluations of the project. One of the major factors found in establishing the pipeline design was the particle size of the Gilsonite in the feed slurry at the mine end. Although the pumps could handle particles of a size, results were dramatically improved with an size. This smaler particle size also decreases degradation, or breaking down of the particles as they at Braddock, - V-in- ch esh travel through the pipeline. It also makes easier, and makes it easier to maintain a suspension through the line. Hence the Gilsonite pipeline is pardesigned to handle ing tf-mesh ticles. The entire pipeline is laid at a See PIPELINE page 4 |
