Work on coal reserves will continue with special emphasis on the study of coals of coking quality. In Alaska a study of the Tofty-Eurek- a placer mining district will be undertaken. Most Bradley ore is being milled r, in Government reserve south deposits that g may be amenable to operations. In addition to the mapping activities, a number of new projects are designed to investigate the processes by which mineral deposits are formed and to improve the techniques used in prospecting for deposits that are hidden. For example, studies will be of Healy Creek strip-minin- undertaken to determine the distribution of minor elements in rocks and ores, and of the distribution and natural fractionation of the isotopes of such light and relatively stable elements as oxygen, sulphur, copper, and boron. An attempt will also be made to hydrogeochemical techto test their use as a and niques (Continued on Page 7) develop at the Ouray plant. ArizonaMinesValuedAt$306Million Arizonas producing mines have been given a total assessed valuation of $306,176,616 by the Arizona Tax Commission. The new figure for the year 1056, tentatively adopted July 6, is an Increase of $107,178,829 or more than 50 per cent over the 1955 valuation of $198,996,787. It is by far the highest valuation ever set for the states mines. The, new valuations are subject to change when the commission convenes August 6 as a State Board of Tax Equalization. While values of nearly all of the producing mines were increased substantially, the major factor in the big increase was the addi absence following tion of new producers to the list, after a two-yea- r the shutdown in 1952, .was the the commission said. Mining - to help Utah grow Many manufacturing industries prefer to build their plants close to a source of raw materials. So Utah's tremendous variety of minerals and its skilled engineers and miners can be the basis forjattracting much more industry to our state. Mining helps Utah prosper now and holds forth the promise of even greater prosperity in the future. UTAH MINING ASSOCIATION "From the earth comes an abundant life for all" |
