Show July 6, 1956 Page 7 The Western Mineral Survey, Sail Lake City, Utah Detail, Map Binghams Giant Thumbprint From Air Necessary To Big Pit BINGHAM CANYON Aerial mapping has recently come to play an important part in the mining of copper at the worlds largest open-pi- t copper mine. Aerial photographs of the huge mine now give amphitheatre-likaccurate survey data engineers and completed maps of mine developments within four weeks whereas in the past it took five e to six months. At the Bingham Canyon mine, giant shovels bite out thousands of tons of ore and waste from the pit every 24 hours. Working on to levels from the bottom of the pit up some 2,000 feet to the tops of the mountains on all sides, these shovels constantly change the working face of the pit. Such an operation calls for detailed and accurate information on just what is happening. Engineers must know exactly how much and where the face of the pit has changed in order to plan future 50-foo- 70-fo- t. ot operations. In the past, survey crews spent months moving about the 972 acre hole, locating benches and obtaining data rfter which several months were required to produce a finished map. By the time the map was completed it was out of date. Now, a private' aerial mapping firm, using aerial cameras and startling new developments in aerial photographic reading, obtains data from which is prepared a detailed map giving information to the engineers as to how the development of the mine is progressing and future mining program planned. Aerial surveys are taken every up-to-da- te six months. Aircraft fly the area in a matof hours, shooting from six to eight overlapping photographs in a series of runs. ter When assembled, these photographs form a complete picture of the mine, showing in detail, all operational development. Width and elevations of the various mine levels can be established accurately by the use of an ingenious device. This instrument utilizes optical principles to produce a stereoscopic projection. By passing a bead of light over the three dimensional picture, the operator is able to establish variations in elevations throughout the entire pit area based on known elevations of targets previously placed at strategic points in and around the area to be mapped. Company officials say the new method of survey has greatly reduced engineering and mapping problems. CLASSIFIED ADS ROYALTIES AND LEASES OIL AND GAS property is our second name.
