The Wallace, Idaho, firm, for years a major producer of lead and zinc in the Coeur dAlene mining region, will explore leases in the Mdunt Spokane district, home of the Daybreak Uranium discovery. Hecla has made a fine record at the Radon and Hot Rock properties in Utahs Big Indian district and its entry into the Spokane field is certain to heighten interest in the smaller firms already at work. Now being completed near Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an eight mile pipeline which will carry water from the steep north slopes of Pike's Peak to the new Air Force Academy. Contracting engineers and tor operators say the area over which the pipeline was laid is some of the toughest in the country." The pipeline, which is a project of the City of Colorado Springs, represents the first major construction work to be undertaken in behalf of the new Air Force Academy. trac- Water will be taken from the Crystal Creek Reservoir on the north slope of Pikes Peak at a height of 9,150 feet above sea level, drop to a low point of 7,500 feet and then climb back to an altitude of 9,000 feet where it will cut through a 4,000 foot tunnel bored through the Rampart Range. The pipeline will carry 15,000,000 gallons of water a day, 5,000,000 gallons of which will be provided for use by the Air Force Academy. Because of the practically vertical cliffs, it was necessary to use a big crawl- Ains-Cbaime- rs er tractor as an anchor to hold another bulldozer-equi- Allis-Chalme- rs pped tractor. With a winch ana cable on each unit, the tractor preparing the pipeline -- bed on the face of the cliff was suspended as it worked its way up and down pushing huge boulders, rocks and trees out of the way. The line is being laid on steep mountain grades and will eventually deliver water to three 800,000-gallo- n reservoirs on the Academy grounds. It has farmed out two leases to a newcomer, North Star Uranium. Daybreaks drilling program on the Spokane Indian Reservation continues to yield good results, it is understood, although officials just arent ready to talk about them yet. Organizers of the firm have decided to seek full SEC registration on 1,250,000 shares of escrowed stock for possible sale in eastern markets.
