Show Vast Gilsonite Deposits Eyed for Coke, Gasoline Stocks to Watch By O. D. The project calls for expenditure of more than $10,000,000 to expand their gilsonite mining operations at Bonanza, Utah, to construct a refining plant in western Colorado, and to lay a connecting buried pipe line to supply the raw material to the new plant. Some stocks two and three times have far less potentialities than has West Toledo. There is a great deal of speculation among Salt Lake City brokers as to the scope of the Cardiff Mining Co. deal. When brokers do not keep customers adequately informed as to important happenings in the mining industry, naturally customers are in the dark. The ramifications of the Cardiff deal are said to be tremendous. This mineral is noted for its lack of impurities. It is not petroleum, asphalt or oil shale. Until now, Gilsonites principal uses have been in the manufacture of floor tile, storage battery boxes, special varnishes, inks and other innumerable products. More recently, special blended and selected gilsonite, marketed cost $2000.) The company expects to handle 100 assays per day with the florimeter, whereas up to the present UCOA has been doing 50 assays per day by chemical process. The installation is to be finished today, (July 1). American Gilsonites decision to refine this raw hydrocarbon on a commercial scale was made after many years of research and the expenditure of more than $1,000,00 to find a suitable process. After mining, the gilsonite will be pumped through an eight-inc- h water pipe line to the site of the new plant. Transport through a pipe line involves keeping the raw material in suspension until it reaches the Colorado terminal, where it will be dried for use as a feed stock to the refinery units. It is estimated that the refinerys initial capacity will be six to seven hundred tons of gilsonite per day. The plant will utilize a fractionator and a catalytic reforming process to urn this solid hydrocrabon into gasoline and intermediate products, and to supply liquid feed for a delayed coker. Gas released by the process will be used as fuel in the operation of the plant. It is estimated that the refinery will employ about 150 workers when it goes into operation.
