Show February 22. 1955 The Western Mineral Survey. Salt Lake City. Utah IV. Van Blerkom Sparked Defense Of Penny Stocks One of the most contented Salt Lake brokers is Walter Van Blerkom, Beason Building, who successfully sparked the defense of the penny uranium stock business in press and magazine articles over the last three months. The basis of Van Blerkom's pleasure is anarticle appearing in Time Magazine, under date of February 14, which points out that uranium prospecting, mining, milling and construction, have become a $100 million a year operation, and which quotes Chief Jesse Johnson of the A.E.C.'s Raw Materials Division, as declaring he regards its growth as a "phenomenal development" in discovery and in mining, since 1948. Van Blerkom wrote the publishers of Time Magazine urging Fair Play, at a time when pub lishers of rival periodicals were printing articles that disparaged the penny uranium industry. The article in Time, entitled "The Future of Uranium," quoted Chief Johnson further, as saying "a high rate of discovery will be required to maintain scheduled production levels." tons each, have been discovered since 1948, mining has climbed even faster. It was pointed out by Time, that seven years ago there were but 15 small uranium mines in the U.S. with 50 employees, compared with a present total of 800 sizeable mines, with more than 400 employees. The magazine article also quot: ed Chief Johnson as confirming A.E.C's intention to consider a longer range government buying program "to cover a period between the defense market and a commercial market of reasonable size." The article pointed out that the A.E.C. needs still more ore, e Even ore may turn giving an estimate that most out to be profitable, according known deposits will be exhausted to a quotation attributed to Chief by 1962. With reports of new uranium discoveries trickling into Salt Lake City, a community that Time refers to as "Uranium's Wall Street" the magazine declares that brokers here are happily riding the crest of a new boom in trading the biggest rush since last May's frantic buying of penny stocks. The Time article estimates at least 20 of the biggest mining companies in the nation, are now looking over most of the small uranium companies that appear to' own promising claims, with the idea of merging their resources if it appears profitable. The magazine article interpreted a change of attitude on the part of Eastern investors, now reported as mailing huge uranium purchase orders, whereas, nine months ago, the same people were belittling the Salt Lake boom. The Time article estimated that the recent big merger of six uranium companies into Floyd Odium's Federal Uranium Company, will provide that organization additional claims possessed of an estimated $7,000,000 in ore reserves.
