Show Friday, July UTAH VALLEY NEWS r are being thrust out of employment for 30 without any assurance of getting back on the days htbIm hr UTAH VALLEY V Nartk Pint FUMJMUNO CO. Wt Utah lh prt MR A alflM at The WPA Strike A- You can't strike President Roosevelt Bays agjinst your own government. Perhaps it wasn't a "strike, yet in many parts of tho country the demonstration amounted to almost that. The situation is serious, ami needs careful analysis Ik fore "judgment' is passed upon either tho government or the WPA workers. First the government is faced with tremendons pr ssure to reduce relief costs which are mounting in the face of increasing business activity, and better prices for most industries. The American Iron and Steel Institute reports sioel production in May amounted to 2,917,876 gross Ions, compared with 1,800,877 for May last year. Sales of nalion-wid- o merchandise, as reported by tno Wall Street Journal, "are running the liest pace The F. W. Dodge corporation in several years. "the highest level in new construction and rejiorts of any May since 1930. Enwork engineering construction awards, according to the gineering are 80 per cent higher Engineering (XX) week the for ($55, 425, endiug June 15) than for the corresimiidiug week of 1938. These records could lie duplicated many times from current reports over the country. Despite this condition relief costs rise higher and higher, und taxes must mount with them. What is the government to do? If it cuts relief rolls it must reduce the liumltcr of relief recipients. Even if you belieYe reactionaries in Congress showed that their hostility toward the unemployed On WPA you yet must admit that the (Jovernment of this country has u tremendous problem on' its hands and must attempt a solution in some manner. As for the "strikers,, our sympathy swells toward them. We lielieve we know how they feel. They are not striking ngaiust their government. They are using the only weapon at their command. They are staging a demonstration to arouse public opinion. From their point of view they see the WPA Appropriation bill mhh "by the skin of its teeth, showing how public opinion could win for them. Theyll get only (it) jut cent of the amount required to carry on the program being budgeted. The result is that about one million persons during the next 12 months will be turned luck on local relief. Business will suffer from lwth ends. Local taxes will have to bo increased to care for the load, and that much less money will be spent from which local taxes can be drawn. They see their rolls reduced within tho next 60 days by all those who have been on WPA for 18 month or more. They see those left on WPA laboring 130 hoars, instead of 85 hours, in order to earn from $44 to $50 a month. They compare this with wiges paid to the man across the street working in private industry, and "wonder why their own government penalizes them. Then too the laborer in private industry sees in the new WPA hill an attempt to bring hourly rates of pay down to the government level, and so tho tabor unions are all backing WPA this time. Try for yourself the tender mercies of pri- vale industry when you are out of work and seeking for it in every possible place, day after day. You wid either give up in despair, or become a "radical. These are plain facts and everybody ought to recognize them. r The WPA projects have also Uen uholished such as the Federal theater, unless local communities can find 25 per cent of the cost. Few such communities will ta found throughout the country. It is our opinion that WPA workers have earned their money many times over, and that the present is no time to discontinue such aid. Xot until the government has worked out some sensible solu- turn for unemployment should we turn the WPA worker out without recourse to some funds with which he can provide for bis family. Direct and local relief are hoth insufficient and inhuman.
