Columbia Provo's Lauded in Making: This City Dustless; Leadership Sought in Fight Against Smoke Nuisance in Utah 31 ay or Envisioning a smokeless Provo when housewives shall have 90 dread of furnaces, no nightmare of housecleaning and no pall of smoke shall cover the city, doing thousands upon thousands of dollars damage to furnishings, walls and decorations, several Provo citizens met a delegation of Salt Lake City citizens Saturday at the City and County building to study the operations of the British Coal Distillation Ltd. as represented by Richard D. Hardy, its chairman and managing director. an established Industry such distillation process, they "It In England, with ten years or will not buy the ordinary coal, 1 operation, and the absolute assurance that amoka can be eliminated from the chimneys qf every borne, removing the vast cost of cleaning and repairing Incident to the smoke nuisance of today, declared Mr. Hardy. Mayor Anderson Praised But why come to Provo? Why bring Ur. Hardy all the way from Venesuela to Utah to explain this distillation process, and theq bring him to Provo? Mrs. Forbes answer was specific: We know Mayor Mark Anderson. We know he keeps his boots on all the time. We know he la fighting for tho people of Provo and of Utah. Ho la pro, g, gressvo and and we know If Provo can solve Its moke problem then every other city In Utah can solve Its probfar-seein- 1 lem. declared the delegation, but that doea not mean any threat to the average coal dealer In Utah. The threat to the coal dealers lies In their failure so far to provide smokeless coal, for housewives over the state are demanding gas or other fuel which la smokeless, and, as a matter of fact, Utah coal mines produced 700,000 tons of coal LESS last year than tho year before, reported Mrs. Forbes, showing tho extent to which householders are other fuels for substituting smokey coal. Charts and (detailed analysis elaborate plant which la entirely operated by machinery, only 17 wen being required for each shift, a total of 51 employes doing 24 hours service In the distillation plant In England. Ha spent three weeks in Venesuela setting up plans for tha construction of a new Venesuelan 14 government plant, whara British Engineers will arrive within a few weeks ready , for beginning of construction. Mr. Hardy believes the machinery can he built here In America as ecoumlcal or mors so than to, bring any equlment over from England, and in fact auch a plant must be built here, but under specifications of their own engineers who have had ten years experience and the whole matter Is beyond the experimental stage now, he asserted. Anderson's opinion, Mayor after examining the numerous blue prints and charts showing the British factory operations, was that such a plant should he sponsored first by tha state or some government agency to prove beyond doubt Its practicability, and then private capital would undoubtedly be attracted to the process here sufficient to furnish the people with smokeless coal In any quantity. The plant at English prices would cost appraxl-wer- e shown by Mr. Hardy of tha SERVICE Radios Refrigerators Washers Call 618 " Experts Always at Your Call RALPH'S RADIO & APPLIANCE CO. , In reply. Mayor Anderson admitted that Provo City commission had gone out to make Provq a dustless city, and had succeeded In paving the entire city, eliminating the dusty roads throughout the community; that a sewage system had been Installed adequate to the needs (of this growing community; that Provq had a water system equalled by few cities In America, and while not claiming credit for, these had things, yet the commission used the federal funds available and had accomplished them without any increase In the general obligation debt of the city. By Products Valuable 11 My personal Interest In this processing of Utah coals dates back many years added Mayor Anderson "but it Is far more keen on the question of from Utah coals than In the mere manufacture of smokeless coal, Important as that might be. Thoucan bo obsands of tained from coal In Utah for they are far more productive of these things than other coals. In fact Utahs greatest potential wealth lies In her coal beds for Utah's coal deposits are among the greatest In the world, and they lie right next door to Provo." Mrs. Forbes and Mks. Garff reported that the Research Foundation's engineer, George W. Car, ter, had sent four samplee of Utah coal to England to have It tested In the plant by the British Coal Distillation , 'Ltd. and that It proved a very satisfactory fuel to treat, and entirely feasible as a commercial proposition in providing a smokeless fuel for Utah consumers as well as great values in numerous They also reported that Dr. Richard R. Lyman of Salt Lake City who la well known as an engineer, la In England and will visit the British plant there to Investigate first hand the entire process and will report to the Foundation nere in Utah. At the last session of the Utah legislature 925,000 was voted as fund for research work to he done by the Foundation, stated Mrs. Forbes, and this visit of Mr. Hardy to Utah is a direct result of the Investigation work being carried on by the Foundation officials. No Threat to Coal Dealer Once people learn what values lie In the smokeless coal which can be made available by some mutely one and a half million dollars set up here. Looks to Provo for Leadership Research The Foundation, stated Mr. Forbee, la organised solely for two purposes: To Clean Utah citlea from the dust and .moke nuisances, and to establish new Industries In the state. 'If Provo can lead in this second great nuisance problem by llmtnatlng smoke si well as dost, declared Mrs. Forbes, the city of Provo will establish Itself as Utahs premier city. We have every reason to hopo that Mayor Mark Anderson and the city commission will give this matter their thorough Investigation, and that soma solution to (he smoko problem will be forthcoming from Provo.
