Show UTAH VALLEY NEWS an infestation from an average of six to twenty adult tlirips per bud the need for some control was heart felt. Check were plots kepi on three average farms of experiences with dot spraying The many conflicting from governmental and reports private experimenters regarding the use of DDT for spraying various kinds of insects led the Orem pear and cherry growers to try their own experiments. To date the experiments have covered only the adult thrip of pears and cherries on some one hundred and fifty acres. With RHEUMATISM and ARTHRITIS so l suffered for years and am' thankful that I found relief! from this terrible affliction that answer anyone I wiil gladly writing me for information. Anna Pautz, P.O. Box .-- 825 FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 1946 Vancouver, Wash. Arch Pulliam. Ed Long, and Julian Hansen. The first thrip showed on March 29 and 30 at Arch s, and Ed Longs iurm. It seemed where there was air drainage there were fewer thrips and they came out later. Due to heavy weather it was not possible to spray the pear and cherry buds before they opened up, so spraying waited until April 13 and 14 where in three mixtures were used on these separate farms. On the Arch Pulham farm an average of twenty thrips per bud counted showed 100 percent control of the thrip sixty hours after spraying time. Mr. Pulham sprayed with DDT, 2 lbs-o- f fifty percent Wettable and one half pound of depositor per one hundred gallons of water. At Ed Long's the spray mixture of four gallons of A von oil and 2 lbs. of 50 percent wetable DDT per one hundred gallons of water was used. Results showed that in 72 hours a kill of 98 percent was found and that six days after spraying not a live thrip could be found. Julian Hansen sprayed cherries on his farm and the cluster of cherries were closed at the time of spraying Results were very slow at the start due to wet weather. However in three days there was a fifty percent kill and at the end of six days 95 percent control was had. Mr. llansen used 8 percent lime and sulphur and two lbs. of 50 percent wetable for spraying. Prom other sprayings thru-othe county it seems these two results are very definite. That good results and control of thrip, regardless of the infection can be had by spraying DDT on the trees cither before the bud opens or after the cluster opens. If sprayed during this time when the thrips are up and the buds closed, results will be very slow. That DDT can be mixed with either oil lime and ut sulphur or straight with water. Interesting to the bee men will be that not one bee has been found dead from the spraying, Bees were in the hives directly o. Pro-Marit- iiuaaEaui INSURANCE LOANS and REAL ESTATE SEE FRED E.
