No man who has received the kindly professional care of a good doctor hot has unstinted praise for the medical profession. The only failure the medical profession can be charged with is its failure to adopt some plan which will put its services within reach of the American people without the use of charity. Anyone who has seen the medical profession in actiad knows that thousands of poor people are cared for without a cent of remuneration to the doctors. Every- -' body praises the doctors for their humanitarian efforts ' in this respect. One statistician recently computed that at least 11,000,000 a day are donated to the service of the side by the American medical profession. This would amount to 9365,000,000 yearly, a sizeable sum. and a reel contribution to the alleviation of sickness and distress in this land. To be able to do this, individual doctors are forced to charge what the patient can afford, knowing that . many hours every week must be donated to charitable work in hospitals, homes and institutions, treating in digent people who will never be able to meet a bill. Those who can pay nothing are thus cared for tar those who can pay man than the "fee system should rightfully . Cv i prefer any system to the present state of private medical fees charity from the doctors or which only the can pay. Cooperative medical care is nothing more than prepayment of your medical coats on a "preventive basis, both doctors and people impose. Of, course all admit that real medical service can never be estimated in actual cash. This system or lack of system works out satisfactorily for two classes of people the very poor and the very rich. Both take their inedical care bills with a shrug of the shoulder, the one saying: "Well, hell get his pay alright He charges plenty , and the other: "WeU, thats that It might have been mine. But for the vast majority of us, doctors bills are things to worry about Theres no way to provide far them ahead. We either have them or we dont If we have them, we struggle for years trying to pay them off. If we dont we never know when they will descend upon us. That very worry, coupled with the delay we always incur due to the fear of the bill attached, makes most of us subject to ills which eventually Mget us. No possibility of "prevention exists in our present medical system. For this we justly blame the medical profession, for nowhere have they attempted a bona fide preventive medicine plan which would and could put medical care available to all, without charity from the rich, nor the acceptance of charity' by the poor.. Medical care can be and is being "budgeted by many people who have organized themselves into groups on a cooperative basis, thus making it possible for the doctors to offer "preventive medicine and yet obtain adequate revenue for their services. Under our present "fee system the doctors would starve to death if everybody were well Like it or not, the doctors live because we are sick so much.' Some say the Utah Medical Society has inaugurated such a plan, and that people may obtain medical care now on a "budget basis. Those who know what that plan is know how Inadequate and utterly opposed it is to the essence and purpose of "preventive medicine. The medical society is using it as "window dressing" to stop any real attempt toward "cooperative medicine, because they do not understand, or refuse to try to understand, the meaning of "cooperative medicine. They l, and would bring Intimate such a system is about the decay of the medical profession. The passing of the "Cooperative Health bill by the Utah House of Representatives shows how many people feel toward this matter of "health without chanty-What we cannot understand la why the medical society cannot see that the "fee system, which benefits so few of the doctors, and keepa so many others away from the patients who need their help so badly. Is antisocial and will eventually bring to America the state medicine which has over-ru- n Europe. If "State Medicine cornea it will be because people heart-breakin- g well-to-- do benefitting thereby. bear UTAHS CALAMITY c. v. h. Total Grand total a calamity! nan: hard llqour lll.lll.U7.
