MEET OPPOSES W VALLXY rVBLISHIMS COL h afflH at Uui Ma DR. HARRIS CONTRIBUTION Provo welcomes home a great man "TOWNSENDITE" Dr. Franklin S. Harris, president of the Brigham Young university, and his wife, after 13 months of travel and service in the East, mainly in Iran where Dr. Harris served as advisor to the ruler of that ancient country. Like Daniel of old who was advisor to Darius the Great of Persia, Dr. Harris has made a marvellous contribution to the present day Persia. His contribution to Iran has been that of helping its people modernize their country and their mode or patterns of thought. They live in a land which for centuries has been the vortex of world events, the pathway for great emperors and conquerors leading them to new lands and greater conquests. Centuries have rolled over Persia only to mingle therein all the cultures of the world, until somehow its present people have become introspective, searching their past for learning and falling to see the impact of world events as they happen. Dr. Harris has brought the New World to them, using his practical mind as the approach to their own learning, a . task he was eminently fitted to do, and fusing the East with the West, and in the process benefitting both. For his contribution is greater than merely modernizing Iran. He has brought home to us an understanding, not alone of the East, but also of ourselves. As the . head of a great institution here he can interpret both in a most practical manner as the years fly by, for he has made us see the importance of our own part in the World drama which is going forward today. Training for leadership is America's task, and more especially Utahs task. The outward push of things, that centrifugal force which sends our young men and women out into the world is a Divine call which thusts them into the panorama of existing forces. Dr. Harris has made us see how the destiny of the world hangs upon such leadership being sent. If only I had the doctors and the legal talent, and the business men which appear before me tonight, he said, "I could truly revolutionize that ancient land of Iran. Its own leaders, steeped in the erudition of the East, have failed to grasp the practical turn to life, and seem content to utter prayers, and repeat forever the learning of their ancient prophets, he commented. Hie world needs the leaven of real leadership to arouse it to new ideas and new achievements, and Utah is not wasting its substance when it trains its youth for leader- ship and responsibility, regardless of how badly we may feel the loss from our own firesides. President Harris has also brought home a love and gratitude for Utah. He seems genuinely appreciative of the blessings vouchsafed to this wonderful land. Appreciation for what we have, for the blessings at home, for our bounteous land of plenty, even abundance, and the freedom we enjoy compensates for the many ills and difficulties which encounter us at every turn. Dr. Harris has come home preaching the gospel of contentment, and loyalty, and intelligent planning for the future ingredients of every great civilization, and component parts of every worthwhile community, or state or nation. We welcome Dr. Harris and his wife back home. We honor their achievement We acknowledge their greatness. We pray for their success, especially in the great task of training our youth in leadership. We express our thankfulness for the labors they have performed in the past, both at home and abroad, and we reaffirm our confidence in their purposes for the future.
