Germany is no more virile than other people. They have dared come out, however, and meet inequalities and inconsistencies in our present social relationships with drastic measures. Our inherent love for freedom of speech and worship and liberty of person has chained us to endure certain economic pressures, which if left alone much longer, will erupt onr present order, as it did in Germany. Then we may expect Tower to Crown Force, and the War God to reign here also. England is feeling the pinch of these new forces, and overnight has become centralized in its control, although preserving the sense and feeling of a free people. Canada likewise has vested unheard of powers in its parliament, and today is regimenting all resources toward one grand objective winning the war for Britain. In America too we aro becoming aware that the old conception of democracy no longer holds sway. A new democracy is winning in our own halls of justice and of legislature. When we think today of democracy we think not alone of the right to vote, but of the right to work and the right to live. When we speak of equality we are speaking not alone of political equality, but also of economic and social equality. Freedom too means more to us today, for it is not merely rugged individualism, but it involves economic and social planning for maximum production and more equitable distribution. True, we have not attained these objectives yet, but in our thinking and talking we are saying these things, and planning for them. The old laissez faire method of control is obsolete and outworn completely the nation which survives this crisis must have centralized control, whether we call it dictatorship or by some other name. But let no one mistake, there will be a vital difference between what Americans will work out in our new democracy and what we see striding across Europe, with war, pestilence, pnd poverty trailing it. 3 and BSe Inst Vetoes m pair for Boys Values f Print and Valaes te S.S8 TOe PLAIN te B SIRS values. tor SljSS Ml (wsn sUghtty e;$ BROADCLOTH TafCrtta SUPS (SM44) , Boys Tommies Agea 49 Turkish Hand Towels te Me for Vodo DRESSES Lanp aide Mind tot of Children's $1.90 50c Fancy White and Hot Ghofto DRESSES Received late Real Shipment Values for Dress Shirts DRESSES SZe Values 49 $tC3 or BOW Work or Si MEN'S a plow-share- s. once-peacef- ZBc D. And with equal speed, relief operations have been started on a g front.' Contributions have been translated into food, clothing, shelter and medical supplies. May 10th was a zero hour for civilization. Military occupation has meant sabotage, arson, pillage and death. Peacetime industries have been, disrupted. Wheat fields have been broken by shells instead of Disorganization of transportation has heightened an emergency of dimininhing food stores. Because we in America possess a merciful heart, we are moved by these things. Newspapers and the radio have brought us every detail. We have traveled with that lonely horde of Dutch, Belgian and French refugees on their pathetic flight to the south. We know of the disheartening plight of English children who have been parted from their families to evacuate enmasse to a countryside and there to hide in the woods under skies darkened by air raiders. All this we know. But what is more important is 'this: We are doing something about their tragic of the American plight. The generous purse has gone into Bed Cross food, clothing and medical supplies. This is tangible mercy, not mere laments, and it has meant bread for the hungry French child, a dean bandage for the wounded British Tommy and comfort for the foot-sor- e refugee. For example, we have used it to drive the French from Mexico after the Civil war; by its use we have established undivided control over the Panama canal; we also forced England to come to terms when a border fight arose between Venezuela and British Guiana. Now it is being challenged by Germany in the present crisis. Hitler says if the Monroe Doctrine is to work in America then Uncle Sam must keep his nose out of European affairs in other words, it is a poor rule that does not measure both ways. Bat two or three things about the Monroe Doctrine seem never to have been understood by Hitler, or if he e does, he ignores them entirely. First, the Monroe has never been used to grab territory for or by the United StateB. It has always been understood to apply to and deal with physical tansfers of territory by other powers, not with political activity. In other words it has never denied European powers the right to carry on political or diplomatic work in the Americas, BUT Hitler seems to think it includes moral suasion no less than military force. United States invented the Monroe Doctrine to protect weaker nations from aggression. Potential conquerors have been prevented from enslaving or oppressing people of the Western hemisphere because of it. Never has this nation used the Monroe Doctrine as an excuse for imperial expansion or geographical aggression. g Now comes Hitler, after Europe, after blotting out all democracies bnt England, which but tpr the support of this country would have no heart to continue the struggle, demanding that United States leave Europe to its fate, and keep out of its affairs, or else I And that else is implied to mean that if America invokes the Monroe Doctrine here, each action argues equal force and sanction for Germany to do likewise in Europe. President Boosevelt has suggested that the disposition of possessions of conquered powers should be a matter in which all should get together and settle the attendant problems, rather than allow them to be decided by the victor. The swaggering Axis powers are certain not to acquiesce in such a suggestion. Accordingly we have the Havana conference of the 20 American republics called for July 20. nitler replies that Germany has no desire to seize British or French possessions in America, and so United States has nothing to kick about yet Bnt Washington authorities know how much reliance to put on Hitlers word. The only effective answer is a united front by all the republics of North and South America, including Canada. Hitler has challenged both. First let us get dearly what we mean by the Monroe Doctrine It happened more than 100 years ago, in 1823, that the sovereignity of this nation was challenged by three great European powers, Russia, Prussia, and Austria, who had formed the holy alliance, to crash a revolution in Spain, obviously with the purpose of land grabbing Spain's possessions in the Western hemisphere. Russia, at the same time, was attempting to dominate the North western coast of North America in the interest of her merchant marine. So President Monroe issued an official warning in the Americas are henceforth not to which he said-th- at be considered as subjects of future colonization by any European powers. In other words, the status quo was., to be maintained so far as Europe is concerned. After- - Regwlar Price Is $1.80 $1.39 Special Complete with Jar Rack QUART - Heavy s Aluminum Pawner ....
