A recent report filed investiby E. B. Harrison, special for the shows Generals at gator office, Attorney least $3,000,000 annually are levied by marble slot machines and other gambling devices from the youth of this state. Mr. Harrisons report makes interesting reading for all who care in the least about where the money goes" in this state, to say nothing about the moral trends such spending indicates. He said: My first assignment, was marble slot machines. At that time, there were about COO of that type of gambling device in Salt Lake City which took a total of more than $1,000,000 a year from the people; with more than this number outside of Salt Lake, making between 1,200 and 1,500 machines taking in approximately $2,000,000 in the great part of this money going to eastern manufacturanti-gambli- . ers." Mr. Harrison explained that complaints have been signed against a total of more than 100 machines and operator and convictions were 100 per .. cent." I also seized a large number of the common slot machines, the midget and large types in the counties of Salt Lake, Utah, Piute, Carbon, Summit, Tooele and Weber," Mr. Harrisons report continues. In all cases that have been tried I have had 100 per cent convictions, the machines being destroyed, contents and fines going to the respective counties. Cases are still pending in Utah, Weber and Tooele counties. A great number of theaters where lotteries Before After trial, with one exception. Also, 1 have signed complaints against a large number of people operating gambling houses, with bookmaking, cards and dice, in the counties of Salt Lake, Weber, Uintah, Utah and Wayne, and up to the present have not lost one Binglo case. However, some of these cases are still pending in district from students Thlrty-sev- Canada, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Missouri, and Utah achieved tha spring quarter honor roll at Brigham Young university according to a report fast issued by Registrar John E. Hayes. Clark K. Brown of American court Fork had tha highest scholastic record for tho quarter In the graduate school. Thom who made the highest grades la the upper division, tho senior end Junior In November, 1939, 1 started an investigation of the punchboard gambling devices. At that time there was an estimated number of over 10,000 such devices. There has been several hundred of these boards seized, the operators arrested and the boards destroyed. Convictions were secured in every instance. In my opinion this is the most vicious kind of gambling, because children are enticed and permitted to gamble on these boards. It would be a safe estimate that money lost in all the above devices would amount to more than $3,000,000 per year. These prosecutions have directly involved one deputy sheriff in Summit County, a justice of the peace in Salt Lake County and a former mayor of Ogden. Also, the charters of two social dubs have been cancelled for permitting gambling. As you know this task has been a difficult one, for the reason some people believe that lawu were not enacted to be enforced. There are some officials who take an oath of office that means little or nothing to them, and they well know that they do not intend to obey or enforce the law when they ' lake that oath. And when the time comes I will be glad to make known to the public the names of these officials who have not done their duty."
