The slag has formed a crust over the dry surface, preventing it from being lifted off during wind storms. st Sec J OUNCE iDRESSING CRADLE over test areas of ihe tailings pond north of the Magna and Arthur Mills. P. 1L Ensign, superintendent of mills, reported that the heavily concentrated salt water has been sprayed over a dry test area by means of a rotating spray, similar to the 32 interconnected rotating sprays of the regular tailings pond spray system. As the water evaporates, the salt forms a solid crust that seals the surface, said Mr. Ensign. Although still in the experimental stage, officials are highly pleased over results so far. If the new experiment meets the test of time, Great Salt Lake water may be used exclusively in place of ordinary water, previously used to keep dry areas moist and prevent dust during wind storms. Meanwhile, Mr. Ensign reported that other projects are being initiated as part of a effort by Utah Coppercontinuing Division to further reduce dust from the tailing pond. Sinre 1953, Kinne-co- tt has spent over $200,000 on dust abatement projects. At present, steps are being taken to irrigate a dry area in the south-wesection of the pond east of Garfield. Wet tailings from the Arthur plant will be flooded into this area. Anoiher factor which has reduced the dust problem is the distribution of a new cover of wet tailings along the south and east sections of the dike through the tailings pumping station.
