Construction of new facilities and modernization of the present Utah plant will be underway by early fall, with completion scheduled by next summer or the ear ly fall of 1956. The transfer of ex plosives operations from California to Utah will thus be gradual, as new facilities are completed at Bacchus. Expansion of the Utah plant, operated since 1915 by Hercules 15 miles west of Salt Lake City, was made necessary by the rapidly growing explosives consump tion in the Intermountain Empire. The Contra Costa County plant, which began operations in 1887 under the name of the California Powder Works, was one of the first dynamite plants to be built in this country, and originally supplied the gold mining opera' tions in California and Nevada. In recent years, increased demands for anhydrous ammonia by agricultural and industrial users brought about a 150 per cent expansion of nitrogen products production at Hercules. Relocation of the California plant's dynamite facilities will make areas available for any plant expansion into additional chemical production. These facilities and other chem ical operations at Hercules. Cal ifornia, will remain at the present site. The company expects only few layoffs to result from the transfer of operations. The Bacchus Plant, which sun- plies explosives for mining, quar ry, construction, and aeismis ex ploration ana agriculture, was named for the late Thomas W. of Her Bacchus, a cules and expert In the field of explosives. The new and modernized plant in Utah, tie company said, will be able to adequately supply users in coin me mtermountain empire and the West Coast.
