Gty Since the Peking Man, who lived some 250,000 years ago, fire has been used to fulfill man's comfort needs. But fire can also be a very dangerous enemy. Uncontrolled, it can dain many lives and destroy a great deal of property. I 64 A.D., Rome cought fire and burned for 8 days destroying the entire city. The Russians set fire to Moscow to drive out Napolcan's army in 1812. ' It burned for 5 days wMi a loss totalling SIS0, 000.000. One of the worst fires in U.S. history was the great Chicago fire in 1871. It burned for 3 days taking 250 lives and leaving 100.000 homeless. On the same day another devastating fire started in Peshtigo, Wisconsin. In 24 hours the forest fire combined with violent winds took the lives of 1500 men. women and children. Sandy is one of the fastest growing cities in Utah. As the population grows so grows the increase in fires and accidents. In June 1974 the Sandy Gty Fire Department responded to 227 fires as compared to 283 calls in June of this year. This docs not include calls on car accidents or home emergencies, all of which are on the increase. Since the purchase of the rescue unit last year many lives have been saved by daring and dramatic rescues by the firemen and their individual medical training. e Each tireman in Sandy is an EMT( Emergency Medical Technician) and a qualified instructor. Their medical knowledge and training is certainly an asset to our community. But one of these vital pieces of equipment is missing; a heart monitor. This machine can monitor the heart beat and send the information instantaneously to the hospital. This could provide the rescue team with an accurate reading of the victim's heartbeat and any sudden change. Between January 1974 and August 1975 the Sandy Rescue Unit treated 34 heart attack or stroke victims; 17 respiratory ailments; and six gunshot wounds and miscellaneous problems all of whom could have been helped by the EKG monitor. The purchase of the heart monitor will make the rescue unit one of the best equipped units in the state. The water storage resevoir will hold a maximum of 3 million gallons of water and will be buried underground and reinforced with concrete. A recreation area with 3 tennis courts will be built atop the structure.
