Turkish Premier Bulent Ecevit has repeatedly asserted that Turkish troops will respect the cease fire lines which have been established, but the advances continue. Turkish flags were planted only 100 yards from the Nicosia airport, which is in the hands of United Nations forces. This places the Turkish mile inside the cease fire lines, which troops approximately they themselves had established. The body of Roger Paul Davies, U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus who was slain on Monday, August 19th, was flown to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. Mr. Davies was killed during a mob attack on the U.S. Embassy in Nicosia. The attack was staged by Greeks who declared the U.S. had supported or at least condoned Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Crawford, Jr., to succeed Mr. Davies. one-ha- lf MOSCOW Silva Zalmanson, a Jewish activist who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1970 for plotting an airline hijacking, was released by Soviet authorities on Friday, August 23rd. Ms. Zalmanson was given permission to immigrate to Israel, but she refused the offer. She said she would remain in the Soviet Union until her husband and her brothers, also imprisoned in the same case of plotting to hijack a Soviet airliner and fly it to Israel, were released. It is believed the unexpected released of Ms. Zalmanson is a gesture on the part of the Kremlin which is aimed at breaking a deadlock in the U.S. Congress over Soviet trade benefits. 30-year-- - WASHINGTON, D.C. Nelson A. Rockefeller was nominated to be of the United States by President Ford on Tuesday, August 20th. Although some notables, such as Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, expressed disappointment, Mr. Rockefellers selection was widely hailed by both Republicans and Democrats. If confirmed, the former New York governor and forma' presidential hopeful would add a liberal element to the conservative Ford administration. It appears Congress will endorse President Fords choice, but Mr. Rockefeller will be subjected to a thorough probe of hi s political and personal life. One area of concentrated study will be his estimated $500 million dollar fortune. The Senate, on Wednesday, August 21st, slashed $5 billion dollars from the Pentagons defense budget. The large cut was engineered by Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman John McClellan of Arkansas. The move was seen as an attempt to control federal spending and to balance the budget of the 1975 fiscal year. The bill approved by the Senate allows for $82.1 billion dollars in defense spending for the fiscal 1975 as opposed to the $87.1 billion dollars the administration had requested. Buford Pusser, a folk hero raised to fame in the movie Walking Tall, was killed in an automobile crash on Tuesday, August 20th. School of Public Health reported on Tuesday, August 20th, that the cancer mortality rate among members of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Da- y Saints was among the lowest of any segment of the American population. Two known gamblers were indicted on 40 counts of gambling and criminal conspiracy. Dr. Anthony Pisani, who served as the Giants chief orthopedic surgeon for 10 years, was mentioned in court papers but was not charged because he cooperated fully with the investigation.
