Show Wednesday, June 5, 1374 THE PARK CITY A FILM CRITIC job is to extract the most meaningful performances his actors are able to give, w'hile also selecting the proper camera angles, the soundtrack, the rhythm, and the special effects that will be used. Because of the nature of his medium, the director can fill the entire screen with Liv Ullmans face, or make her a pin point on the horizon. The choice his, and the success or failure of a film can usually be traced to the man who shouts Lights --Camera - Action. The Marx Brothers are an interesting case in point. While these precursors of planned insanity were a bright spot in American cinema, their films suffered from a lack of a viewpoint that a strong director can give a film. Go West was directed by a Hollywood hack so famous that I had to look him up six times before I could write this column. In fact, I forgot him again, so if you want to know his name, youll have to look it up yourself. Very few people realize that the Marx Brothers, unlike Chaplin and Keaton, did not have much control over the films in which they appeared. Instead, they watch as others wrote the scenarios of the film. It is a tribute to their genius that their films are as delightful as they are. The Marx Brothers put a great deal of themselves in their films. Its apparent in their best scenes. But what if they would have had total control? The King of Hearts makes its second appearance at the Opera House in three months. Indeed, the residents of Park City are fortunate to be able to see this film at their local theater. The Opera House is the only theater in the area that can show the film for several years. Exclusive rights on a little known flick like The King of Hearts? Why? Because it is a good Him whose reputation among film fans is growing steadily, and for good reason. It is an anti-wfilm that does not try to sicken you with blood and guts or doesnt preach about the subject. Instead, it simply contrasts gentle outcasts with the cornerstone' of our free society. The film is a gentle comment about the world and all societies everywhere. The King of Hearts is also fun. Not the deep belly laughing fun of a Woody Allen flick, but the warm feeling that one gets when one sees a film that treats the human race as a compassionate loving type of animal, while stUl poking fun at its flaws. Most of the main characters of the film are insane, a distinct minority in the social structure. They are all that remained in the town where the townspeople learned that it was about to be blown up by the Germans. Alan Bates plays the English Soldier whose job is to find the bomb, and disarm it, thereby saving the bridge and enabling the Allies to advance. Bates is crowned the King of Hearts by the members of the insane asylum, and, like true royalty, is concerned about the safety of his subjects. By making the majority of the cast insane, the director is allowing you to detach yourself and view the film as though you were peering down from Mars. By the end of the film, you find that you no longer want to remain detached but join in with Alan Bates in his pro-lif- e statement. ar IF liqm tasacnr down ALSO older elegant homes and quaint houses. Then, as Arthur Murray used to say, Put a little fun in your vegetables, try Eggplant. Well, perhaps those werent his exact words, but then the eggplant has been neglected by many people. There are two types of eggplant: purple and white, the former being the most common variety in the United States. When purchasing eggplants, select the ones with skins and a pear shape. They can be stored in the refrigerator for dark-gloss- up to two weeks, but eggplants are pretty enough to be put in a bowl with other vegetables or fruit and placed on the table as a decorative touch to the dining area. Eggplant is most commonly inch thick, dipped into beaten egg, and into bread or cornflake crumbs, then browned cm both sides in hot fat. Here, however, are two alternative ways of preparing eggplant that are sure to turn your family (and pared, sliced xk maybe Arthur. Murray) into eggplant enthusiasts. In many .cases, I generally believe that the director is the main attraction of film simply because he is the cement that binds the film together. His position is unique in the. performing arts. A film director, unlike his stage counterpart, can enjoy complete control over his product from beginning to end. (Or, at least, thats the way it happens in fairy tales, but more on this later.) A stage director can mold and influence his people change a scene here; decide on the inflection in an actors voice but once the actual performance begins, he has no control over the end result. His influence is over, and into the hands of those he has guided. The film director does not have that handicap. When one goes to the cinema, the images that one sees have been selected by the director.
