After graduation, Marianne La Barpba Nite Hlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll M 5 . . Every Wednesday ed worked at Alta for two winters earning her living as a waitress and a baker. The intervening summer was spent in Anchorage, Alaska, where she was employed as a legal secretary. The teaching profession consumed the next two years of her life. Ms. Cone was an art teacher in the Ogden school system and .was also a ski instructor. In June of 1971, Marianne moved back to Park City and went to work for Greater Park City Company as a secretary to Mr. Bob Wells. Two years later Mr. Wells lost a secretary and Park City gained a dedicated ar- JJJ BEER GARDEN age four and entered her first show at age nine. Her inclination toward art then took a backseat to other interests. She continued to take art classes in school, but she was not obsessed with art and she did not foresee it as a lifes ambition. She enrolled at the U of U as an English major, but by the end of her freshmen year it was obvious to Marianne that art is what I should be doing. Even though she had been doing watercolors continuously since childhood, she drifted away from painting when a professor informed her that she did not possess a singular style. Thinking that this inability to paint in only one fashion was demonstative of a lack of talent and not indicative of a search for what was right for her, Marianne devoted her attention to crafts with an emphasis on pottery. She to returned watercolors, remains. Marianne was bom in Keetley but her family moved to Park City when she was only six months old. Although raised here, she attended high school in Salt Lake City and then continued her education at the University of Utah. Her major was, unsurprisingly enough, art with a concentration on crafts. Marianne enjoys doing woodblock printing but because these prints are not as salable a commodity as watercolors, she is unable to allocate as much time as she would like to this art form. The professional artist faces a paradox which was reflected by Ms. Cone.. "I. hate to, sell works; - art was manifest at an early age. Examples of Mariannes work can be found hanging on the walls of the Rain Forest plant shop in town as well as in the gallery at University Hospital. She sells her paintings from her house and has also sold to the Salt Lake City Art Goiter. Aside from painting the plants, buildings, and landscapes from which she makes her living, Marianne is involved with civic projects. She is currently the Chairwoman of the Summit County Heritage Foundation whose main purpose is the preservation of historic buildings throughout the county. Marianne is also serving as recording secretary for the Park City Arts Foundation. The Foundation's major function is the staging of Park City's annual Arts Festival. Giving her overall view of Park City, Marianne stated that the town offers a rather unstructured environment due to the relatively few commitments which the townspeople have to make. This in turn results in more flexibility and less hassles for its citizens. Her one recommendation was that more people become involved in community affairs. To earn a living by doing that which you enjoy is truly a fortunate circumstance. Marianne Cone has not only found such a profession but she has also found the place to pursue it . |
