From the plans and work which have been put forth thus far, the Clean-u- p should be a tremendous success. The Coalition wishes to acknowledge the time and effort of all people involved. This Clean-u- p campaign is the best ever in Park City. The end result of a dean Park City will be a direct reflection of those people who have labored on the Spring Clean-u- p event. Thank you. SKIING AND THE HIGH SCHOOL Now that the ski season is over, its a good time to reflect on the season past and try to place in proper perspective the impact of this winter sport on our of our residents thrive on the economic benefits of skiing, yet were only beginning to take advantage of the opportunities of our mountain and resort related activities. The town and school system seem to want to operate, by and large, as if the dock were turned back 20 years and no resort existed. com-munity.'M- ost . New blood in the City Council is helping to make some progress in city planning and operation, but the School Board and High School administration and faculty still fail to recognize the importance of skiing as a legitimate sport. Like other schools in the state, athletic emphasis has been on football and basketball: team sports reserved for participation by only the young and hearty. Shouldnt we be encouraging in our education more lifetime sports suet as skiing, tennis and golf ? 'Hie staff of the Coalition submits that Park City is unique enough that the conventional sports sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Assodation are not completely in the best interest of our childrens education in view of our resort environment. We challenge the School Board and High School Administration to get their heads out of the sand and take action. Skiing cannot be ignored. On the contrary it should be emphasized in the curriculum of Park City schools. The new coach who will be hired should have a stamg skiing background, and be able not that abolished, biit in terms' of frtategtftf sport? students who participate, skiing even without an organized program involves already more students than all of the team sports put together in Park City. We would like to see Park City High School take a leadership position in getting the Utah High School Activities Assodation to recognize skiing as a school sport and organize competition between schools. A number of other states with much less skiing potential than Utah have had sanctioned skiing programs for years. Until sanctioning takes place, why couldnt Park City sponsor a high school ski race and invite teams from all schools willing to field a team? The possibilities are endless. rJrJrJrJrJrJrirrar-JfJrJrJrJfJrJfitIiiJi- i! CITY ONE YEAR: $10.00 out of state I NAME ADDRESS Mail Subscription Form to: PARK CITY COALITION P.O. BOX 738 PARK CITY. It was delightful to get back, j d5way. Its sfcsukfbe real I But its mighty easy to interpret the results. Based on the count anybody can see that Park City aint a hard liquor town. No sir! And the most interesting thing about my little survey is that I cant put any (at least not much) blame on the city officials. No sir. Only counted 17 cans layin in the street. At least thats all I could see in the little piles of rubbish in the gutter. Nope. The bulk of our aluminum and glass supply is located on private property. Vacant lots, alleys, front yards, side yards, driveways, and parking lots. Theyre ripe. Why, a man could make a fortune if he really put his mind to it. At ten cents a pound. But it aint just those scapegoats we got called absentee landlords who are to blame for Park Citys metallic gardens. Theres enough blame to go around to include all die people who live or work on Main Street. And while I surely know that the snow just melted away, what it reveals when it melted is enough to make a body sick. Why, Ive been in some of the best slums in the world, and they couldnt hold a candle to Park City. Sure does make me wonder about Park City pride. P.C.
