The fire was first sighted by Mr. Donald Stoll, who lives on Rossi Hill, at approximately 7:10 a.m. An electrical malfunction is suspected as the causative factor. Due to heavy snow on Brighton Road, normal firefighting apparatus was prevented from reaching the scene. Firemen were transported to the mine by snowcats and they had to employ hand carried equipment. Hoses were also carried to the blaze but the water supply at the site was insufficient for combating the fire. The razed buildings consisted of timber skeletons paneled with tin sheets. The tin siding and roofing contained the heat to such an extent that a metal hoist cable was found to be melted. Also destroyed were two air compressors. At one point, the fire spread from the buildings to the collar of the shaft. It was feared that the collar would burn away and drop down the shaft, setting fire to the drift timbers. Snow was plowed into the collar area by Caterpillars This is our new Coachs Shoe. Rugged outside. Soft inside. Captive air, foam, and free air. and this action successfully prevented what could have been disasterous consequences. 'As of Sunday afternoon, the conflagration was essentially contained. Although the Daly West is not in operation, it acts as a ventilation shaft for the Number Three Shaft and consequently, men working to reopen Number Three had to be evacuated. Mr. Niles Andrus, President of Park City Ventures, stated that due to its ventilation function, a new hoist would have to be built on the Daly West in order to keep it serviced.
