Show The Deseret Sampler, Fri., December 20, 1974 Ditto Visit For DHS Seniors CounselorsCorner Chaplains Corner What Is Christmas? By Richard G. Bell Christmas isnt just tinsel and ribbons. That is, it isnt unless you have made it so in your home. Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because you see joy in your neighbor. It is forgetting self and finding time in others. It is a leisurely schedule because you have simplified your needs and desires. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing true values. It is time spent with each member of your family. It is peace because you have found peace in His teachings. Jesus the Xhrist was bom of a virgin, cruelly martyred on a cross, and resurrected on what we call Easter morning. Those who love Him celebrate these signal events warshipfully and joyfully; thankful for his redeeming sacrifice and his saving grace. But it should always be remembered that the Savior also lived on earth among men for 33 years. What was important to Him? What did He want for us? what did He do and teach? He gave us many principles and parables. One scripture, very special to our season, is taken from St. Matthew. To really know what Christmas is, read this scripture thoughtfully. Read it i the quiet of your room, read it with your family and go thou and do likewise! Matthew 25:34-4- 0. Ann M. Are you one of those people who stays indoors on this traditionally unlucky day? Do you carry a horse shoe in one hand, a four leaf clover in the other and have a rabbits foot on your key ring? And if you happen to build up enough nerve to go out of doors, do you tip toe over every crack, avoid ladders, never handle a mirror, and if you run into a black cat. you die of fright, right? Youre right, Friday the. 13th. WELL, this particular Friday the 13th turned out to be a very lucky day. How can it be any other way, when you have the chance to visit with your friends while sampling many lovely pastries? The tea for the ladies began at 3:00 and at 5:00 die husbands were invited to join the wives. There were plenty of hot hors doeuvres and pakries, coffee, tea, plain punch and champagne punch: well after all its only Christmas once a year. The early realization that a problem exists makes it easier to be honest about drinking and to seek help. The best chance fin1 recovery occurs in an environment of social stability. A person who has maintained his family ties and job is more likely to become and remain sober than a drifter. In the early stage of alcohol abuse, the recovery potential is greater, there is las likelihood of permanent physical damage and there probably will stilll be a good chance to preserve the family unit. It is extremely seldom that a problem drinker can get well without outside help. In fact, most experts in the field of alcoholism say that some kind of outside help is always required since alcoholism is progressive. At die very least die person needs help in rearranging his life so that he can again live with die tremendous physical and emotional addiction to By Reid Grawe It all began at 0900 hours and ended at 1330 hours on December 10th, Tuesday, amidst early morning confusion about completing visitor passes.
