Thuraday 19 Sep HRRC Begins Series About Alcohol Abuse This is the beginning in a series of articles about alcohol abuse. The articles are presented by the DPG Human Relations Resource Center to aid DPG employees and their families in learning more about alcoholism. THE LESS that anyone who drinks knows about alcoholism, the greater the danger of his becoming a problem drinker. Most often we tend to define alcoholism with the skid row drunk, but the fact is that 95 to 97 percent of todays problem drinkers are the ordinary people we associate with. Alcoholism does not respect any sex, social class, degree of education or age. There are hundreds of definitions of alcoholism. Alcoholics Anonymous says alcoholism is a physical compulsion coupled with a mental obsession. It is often described as a disease. Another definition states that alcoholism is the use of alcohol in such a manner that a persons social, emotional, intellectual, financial or spiritual needs are disrupted. Whatever definition you choose to accept, there are interesting statistics to note. THE POTENTIAL for alcoholism is quite staggering. Seventy-fiv- e percent of adult Americans drink alcoholic beverone at or another. The number of alcoholics in the time ages U.S. is estimated at between 7 and 10 million. This means that at least one in every twenty and probably one in every twelve people over the age of 18 has a drinking problem. In later articles we will discuss why some people become alcoholics, how to recognize the signs of alcoholism and what you can do about alcoholism. o.
