The spaces will be reallocated to combat and combat support units on a worldwide basis. The reductions should help the Army move toward its goal of building a combat force of 16 divisions. The cutbacks are part of an Army effort to reduce and support headquarters activities while improving combat readiness. The major reductions of support activities will occur in the Western Pacific affecting Army activities in Japan, Thailand and Okinawa, Korea. Army headquarters in Alaska, Panama, Hawaii and the U.S. are being phased out. Other headquarters in Europe also will be phased out. The action should be completed by the end of the current fiscal year. |
