Show The Deseret Sampler, Friday, Dec. 7, 1973 Commodore Robert E. Peary was within reach of his goal. Camped within the Arctic Circle, he stood only 33 miles from the top of the world. With him were four eskimos and a man they called Marie Polook, Eskimo for dear little Matthew. Matthew A. Henson had been exploring with Peary for 25 years and had accompanied him to the land of eternal snow on eight previous occasions. Black Americans in history Matthew Henson FIVE WHITE MEN had been on this, the ninth expedition, but one by one Peary had sent them back to liase camp as the party moved within striking distance of the North Pole. Peary chose Henson to go with him on dash. I cant get along without him, the final Peary explained. He was a better man than anyone of us, one of the white assistants later added. On the morning of Apr. 6, 1909, Peary, Henson and the four Eskimos pushed off, covered the remaining miles and planted the American Flag at the North Pole. That hardi, alien land was a long way from Charles County, Md., where Henson was bom in 1866. Theyve acted together before in the movie version of 1776 where they played Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jefferson. Originally titled Mr. and Ms., it was decided that they would revert back to the movie title from which it gets its name. Of course we have another case of nostalgia here with the show coming from the 1949 movie of the same name with Spencer Tracy and Katharine Ilepbum. The same thing that killed The New Perry Mason may have been the demise of this show. Always being compared to someone else leaves no room for a good n. performance, it must lie outstanding. A rarity in 1949, equal rights for women is more of a contemporary theme. With Amanda defending women who are being discriminated against, and Adam sometimes prosecuring them, the situations lend themselves to humor which more often than not does not pan out. The defense of a woman who is a operator but cant get a job, or an 11 year-ol- d girl who isnt allowed to play Little League haseliall, are typical cases on the show. The show is a good one and alxive the average .situation comedy. What it could be is just a little bit 1 letter. The stars are fine and hopefully theyll tie back in another series, but not necessarily together. jack-hamm- er .
