Show Strictly television Childrens T.V. right or wrong? by Cary A. Tomasello Whats wrong with childrens television? Anything? Many critics would have you believe that after watching Saturday morning programs on the three networks a child might go insane. There are really two main beefs against network programming for the children. The first is the use of violence in kids shows and the second is advertising. LETS TAKE the first one: violence. Hie same peowho are saying cartoons are bad had the privilege of ple Fljsh Gordon, growing up with Terry and the Pirates, Steve Canyon, and Dick Tracy to name a few heroes who did in their enemies in any possible way. club is If the objective of the take a evil them let from to shelter their children doings, look at the rest of the world. Violence might be erra cheated by exposing children to it and showing them that its wrong rather than locking them up away from the world. What may lie inane to one person may be the best thing going to another. Josie and the Pussycats in Outer-spac- e or Sabrina the Teenage Witch dont conjure up artistic endeavors, Imt then who is to say that these shows arent popular among todays children? Has anyone ever asked them? TIIE SECOND objection is advertising. Opponents of this question are afraid their children are being exploited and brainwashed by commercials. They may very well be right. With children coming criaway from commercials with the I want syndrome, tics may have a valid point against commercials in childrens programs. From the networks point of view though, commercials are a necessary commodity. After all thats how they survive. Of course theres the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) that doesnt run any commercials, but relies on the FounCorporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the Ford for smaller its other several and money. dation, groups zap-Xap- Educational? Should childrens television be concerned only with the role of educating a child? I dont think so. If this were the yaw the kids would probably get bored very fast, unless they really enjoy school. Entertainment in the form of cartoons doesnt seem to have left an indelible stain on my mind. The same be against people who are against cartoons would probably another is or character one where shows Punch and Judy stick. with a hit getting EDUCATION doesn't have to be a math lesson, a children are history lesson, or an English lesson.
