The inspiration for the program came from Mark and Dave who contacted Army Houle, Community Services when they sensed a need to provide a recreational outlet for the children during the summer months. ACS agreed, and a program of athletics designed to be entertaining and beneficial for the children was developed. THE THREE major activities of the program include running on Mondays and Fridays, on Wednesdays and bowling swimming on Thursdays. In the past, Mrs. Evelyn Jacobs noted, Dugway has provided an excellent summer program for the children. However, Mrs. Jacobs would like to see more activities for the children during die winter. In the first couple of pages of this novel. Captain Blackman is shot up badly, cominiting an act of heroism in Vietnam. Only the clay before, during his black military history seminar cm liase, he had told his men that he didn't want any heroes in his company. Now Blackman's sulicoiisciotis takes over and the rest of the Ixxik develops as a lengthy black military history lecture covering 'virtually every war in which Americans have fought since the American Revolution, and starring Blackman as a sort of perennial John Wayne with a permanent cast throughout. This is unquestionably a need to readjust some of the lialances in American history, but Williams is too good a novelist to lie writing tracts. This has to lie his most disappointing Ixxik to date. It may lie popular, though, and evcu as an unfortunate milestone in the career of one of our liest contemporary black novelists it deserves a place in most lilnury collections. - Eric Moon, President, Scarecrow Press. A HAPPY DEATH by Albert Camus (Fic.) Howard's translation of Camus's first novel, written lietween 1936 and 1938, preserves a sense of the verbal felicities of the original. As a work of fictiou, the Ixxik is not entirely satisfying, but in its relationship to THE STRANGER and to the essays, its importance is undeniable. The hero, Mcrsault (whose name differs by one letter from Meursault, the protagonist of THE STRANGER), commits a murder for the sale of money in order to buy himself a life of leisure time in which to create his own happiness. 7 The happy death" of the title signifies the completion of a life lived to satisfaction in a d state of happiness. While lacking the unity and thorough development of Camus's later work, this short novel includes many of his recurrent themes: rebellion against the mundane and mediocre, conscious acceptance of the rigorous truth of one's own actions, exile in gray northern regions, union with nature in the unrelenting sun of Algeria, and rejection of societal morality. The novel's flaws are in its episodic disparity and the decreasing impact from the initial description of the murder until the heros natural death from pleurisy. Fishing Tips Hot summer days make people feel like sitting in the shade and doing nothing. Chances are fish feel this same way. Fishing is generally good in most waters during spring but it often slows down in summer as fish seek cool water deep in lakes and reservoirs. Anglers should change their tactics to match the change of fish habits. Fish the deeper parts of lakes during the middle of the day. Fishing near inlets where cooler, aerated water enters from streams is often productive. Trolling deep or fishing on the bottom with bait 'will help get the fishhook where the fish are.
