Show Game trails AAFES Reminds Customers Of Its Layaway Service half and a brand new bullet for less than a nickel You can even mold your own bullets from scrap lead and cut the cost to almost nothing. SOME sets come loading by Roy Kessel Have you ever been hunting and after a long and patient stalk or wait and the game finally does fhow, you shoulder your gun and the shot ii sent toward the target only to punch holes in the air or kick dust from the rocks? I am sure that it has happened to nearly every hunter who has gone afield. There are many reasons for this happening, some we can do little about. Climbing a mountain, sloshing through a marsh or just a long walk in the sage brush can fatigue a man A long wait may relax us physically, but tense up our nerves till they are as taut as a drumhead. A really nice buck in line with the sights sets the adrenalin flowing and the heart beat quickens, all to the detriment of our aim. THERE ARE other factors too. We all fancy ourselves pretty fair shots or we wouldn't even try the hunting game. Are we all as good as we think we are? Probably not. When we miss an easy shot we look all about for reasons, and usually one or all the mentioned reasons can be used and they are all valid. If we can recognize a problem it is half solved, but, what is die rest of the solution. Keep yourself in the best possible physical condition, this is good advice for everyone. Take a hike sometime just for the fun of it. It, will help to keep you in good shape and teach you a lot of things that are useful when you do hunt. Another part of the solution is to practice shooting, and even better is competition shooting. That brings up another problem. When you decide to practice with your 30-0270, 280, 380, 30-3or whatever is your choice of a big game rifle, the price of ammunition can put the little woman in direct opposition to your whole program of self improvement. When you shell out the better part of a five dollar bill for little more than three magazine loads of cannon fodder, the practice sessions become shorter in direct relationship to the dollars left in the secret compartment of your billfold. SO WE have another problem and we are in need of another solution. The dimunitive 22 rim fire is cheap to feed, and going after with one of those little pea shooters is great sport You learn to shoot fast and hopefully straight. IF you can hit a it running at fifty yards, a deer ' at three hundred will give you no problem. Now we all know that a .22 doesn't kick like a 30-0and (t sure doesn't sound like a 30-0- 6 either. The biggest cause of misses in a high powered rifle is flinching just when we shouldn't. A big help in this department is to leave the really big ones to the Elephant and Ti270, 280 ger hunters. A 308 or any of their cousins will take any game animal in North America with the possible exception of the brown bear at any reasonable range that you can shoot straight. Less kick means less flinch and better hits and more meat left. Also the ammo costs less than those big impressive cannons with magnum in their names. ' The final solution that will make you a crack shot, save you money and let you shoot all that you would like while spending little more than the price of 22 rim fire ammo is to load your own ammunition. Did you know that when you throw away the brass case you are (browing away sixty-si- x percent of the cost of your shooting? You can that piece of brass with a primer for about 6 pents, powder for a penny and a with everything you need to go into the handloading business for less than ten dollars and sale prices bring that down to near half of that. If you can follow directions and use reasonable care, it is as safe as mowing your lawn. In my next article we will explore some of the possibilities that are yours in "rolling your own" in ammunition.
