AAFMPS began in 1920 when tlie U.S. Army Motion Picture Service was set up under the Adjutant General of the Army. In 1941, the activity was transferred to the Morale Branch, which has since changed its name to Special Services. The present organizational name was adopted in 1948 after the Air Force had become a separate ser- vice. AAFMPS now operates out ot the Pentagon and is under the jurisdiction of a lioard of directors comprised of both Army and Air Force representatives. The chairman of the lward right now is Lt. Gen. Frank J. Sackton, the Comptroller of the Army, but the alternates between position the two services. Sitting on the lioard in addition to general officers of I Kith services are; AAFMPS Chief Roliert E. Quick; Sgt. Maj. George W. Dunaway, sergeant major of the Army; and CMS Donald L. Harlow, chief master sergeant of the Air Force. In addition to providing entertainment for soldiers and airmen, AAFMPS assists in raising funds for military welfare and morale activities. Marcus Welby, M.D., a dramatic series alwut a general practitioner and his assistant won three top awards, the most for any series. Marcus Welby is seen on channel 4 on Tuesday nights at 9:(X). Robert Young, cast as the all knowing Dr. Welby, was named as the outstanding actor in a dramatic series, his assistant and James Brolin was named best sup- and actor the series was named best dramatic porting series of the season. Patty Duke and Peter Ustinov won Emmys for outstanding performances in dramatic specials. Both Specials were bn race relations. Miss Duke starred with A1 Freeman Jr. in My Sweet Charlie, a story of a pregnant white girl and a black lawyer who is sought for murder in the south. Freeman was also nominated in this excellent special. Ustinov won his Emmy for the part he played in He was a crotchety old Jewish A Storm in Summer. merchant who provided a summer home for a black youth from the slums of New York. This is Ustinovs third Emmy. The program was voted Best Dramatic Production. Room 222 was voted by the industry as the liest new series for the season. Room 222 is seen on channel 4 at 7:30 on Tuesday. Voted as outstanding variety or musical series was the David Frost Show a syndicated talk show in New York. The show is not seen in this area. Hope Lang of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir won the outstanding actress in a comedy scries for the second time in as many years. The Ghost and Mrs. Muir has lieen canceled by ABC. Last year site won the same award for the same show which was canceled by NBC. Another top award also went to a canceled show, William Windom, for his role in My World and Welcome To It which was canceled by NBC. Winner for liest supporting actor and actress in a new series went to Michac1 Constintine and Karen Valentine lxith in Room 222. Other awards went to ABC and CBS for liest achievement in sports programming for Wide World of Sports and NFL Game of the Week. Ridiard Levinson and William Link received the liest writing award for the My Sweet Charlie script. National Educational Television won two awards one for the outstanding classical musical program which featured the National Ballet of Canadas production of Cinderella. It was the first of the daytime radio programs to make the transition to television, that was 18 years ago and now it is still going strong.
